A total of 25 players participated in the Championship of the Northeast Kingdom in Newport, Vermont, on June 14, 2008. In addition to Vermonters, players from Quebec, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts took part.
The 15-player Open Section included a master and four experts. Two of the experts (Neil Sullivan and Armando Lopez) tied for first at 3.5 - 0.5. There was a 3-way tie for third involving Alex Levkovsky, Haizhou Xu, and John Ward, at 3.0 - 1.0. As the highest-scoring local resident, John won the Championship of the Northeast Kingdom Trophy.
The 10-player Under 16 Section ended up in a 3-way tie for first involving David Ro, Piraveen Vyramuthu, and Daniel Ro, each 3.0 - 1.0. The Junior Champion of the Northeast Kingdom trophy was won by Zachary Terhune, 2.0 - 2.0.
Thanks to many class prizes and several ties, more than half the participants earned portions of the $500 prize fund.
We look forward to similar events in Newport.
