One would have to hear the squeal in order to tell what it is. It could be a number of things, but the number one cause of squeal when transmitting IMO, is the use of a talkback feature with the mic gain to high. I don't thing the 148 came stock with talkback, so this may not even be relevant. I don't think a capacitor would do much good unless you knew exaclty where to put it. NOW, the engine noise, is that comeing in on YOUR audio when transmitting or are you just hearing it on your radio when listening? If it is the later, you will need to determine if the engine noise is coming in on the power side or the antenna.
