Hi, I did my CFY last year and was put in two middle schools. I was clueless on how to work that age going into it (and scared too!). I worked in a district that was very low socioeconomic status, so I had a lot of low language kids. They loved playing games so I tried to incorporate games into a lot of my sessions b/c it was hard to keep them motivated. They loved the game Blurt! It is a vocabulary game that you can get at Toys R Us or Wal-mart. They enjoyed Trouble and Sorry is another good game. We also played Jenga a lot. After they did a couple of exercises they could take a turn. I also put words on the Jenga pieces, like before, next, otherwise, although, etc. and had them formulate grammatically correct sentences with the words orally and written. I used No Glamour Language for Middle School a lot, and No Glamour Language for some of my lower kids. I also used Help for Middle School. All of those books are from LinguiSystems. They also make a No Glamour Language Game. My CFY supervisor gave me a couple of books called Listen! Hear! Activities to Improve Listening Skills, by Graeme Beals. I'm not sure where she got them though. But my students seemed to really enjoy these. I would read off directions for drawing a picture and they would have to follow them. After we went through the directions we would check and see if their pictures matched the directions I read. It was great for those that needed help attending to and following directions. I'll try to keep thinking of more activities we did. I know it is a tough age. As far as evaluations materials...I used the CELF, OWLS, TAPS, EVT, PPVT, regularly. Hope this helps!
