I use the "Good Communicator" cards from the Communicate game (or any token if you don't have those) and award them a token/card whenever they use their sound correctly OR are polite when a neighbor is taking their turn. This encourages the kids to use their sound in spontaneous conversation at appropriate times, stay engaged, and think of words on the fly that use their sound. I take cards away if they are not appropriate. At the end of the session, the winner gets a reward. I also use these cards if someone is at the carryover level - they get two cards if they catch their own error and correct it spontaneously and one if they catch their neighbor using a sound incorrectly. Dramatically improves motivation.
