I have a student who is in 4th grade and presents with a vocalic /r/ distortion. This student also has a pretty significant overbite, so his mom took him to the orthodontist last week. She was told he needs braces and none of the cost is covered by their insurance company (since his face is not disfigured). The mother was upset and told the receptionist at the dr. office that the overbite affects his diet (cannot chew hard foods, like meats, since there is no strong support) and speech. The receptionist had an idea of having me, as his speech therapist compose a letter to the insurance co describing how the overbite impacts his speech so MAYBE they can cover these braces (at least partially). Has anyone ever made this request of you?? I'm not exactly sure how to compose such a letter. Any ideas/suggestions will be much appreciated!
Thanks!
