I would get an early start. It helps your year go smoother if you get yourself organized. I would start by getting to know your principal, assistant principal, secretary, custodians, and the other special educators in your building. You will need all of their help at some point and time during the year. Then get your room in order. I can't think if I have a mess around me! Next I would go through all of your files and make a list of when your students' IEPs and eligibilities are due. When available, get the school roster so you can see which classes your students will be placed. Then, I'd start reading through your files to see what you and your students will be working on this year. I never seem to have much luck making a schedule in advance. I'm at a huge school and it take a good week and a half to work out the lunch schedule, EIP schedules, and special education schedules. Good luck!!
