It might depend on your state, so you should probably check with someone who really knows. In my school district (and my state), the only thing that needs to be kept are IEPC reports, eval. reports and other "official" documents. Our special ed. office holds on to all of that stuff for 10 years. I have a file of my own on each student, but only have copies of IEPs along with my test protocols, informal notes, etc. None of those items has to be kept, so I could shred everything as soon as I dismiss a student. I actually usually hold on to my file for about 3 years, in case the student is referred back to me or, in the case of students who move away, if they come back to our district (some of them are a bit like yo-yos.)
