One Journal? You get four - all the way back 10 years plus - and they store them for you, and you can search through them electronically. No hunting through stacks for something you think you read but haven't a clue where. I often take advantage of this benefit. Don't just consider that paper they are sending you, rather the collective intellectual property that is available to you.
How is your school job going? Do you ever need to consider workload/caseload issues? ASHA will send you a free implementation guide, because their members have worked through it and will help you present ideas to your colleagues and administrators.
Do you want a stipend for having national certification? ASHA is our only chance. Your state may certify that you are completing general educational continuing ed, but probably not ensuring that you are continuing to advance as a Speech Pathologist. I don't know about you, but if I were dependent on the skills I had when I received by CCC's 30 years ago, I would be a very narrow minded, limited SLP today. I believe continuing education is a responsibility, and ASHA is able to verify to the outside world that we remain cutting edge. If you leave the schools for some reason, ASHA can vouch for you. The schools can't in the non-educational arena.
Paying for your CCC's was a wise move, and shouldn't be an action of fear.
PS. In the schools this year, I make almost 70,000. If ASHA dues had been $200 every year (they were about $100 when I started), that would be $6000, only 10% of one year.
