When I do SS or Science I reteach what the teacher has taught and teach students memory strategies to retain/recall information for tests quizzes. I also modify test and assignments.
I feel the thing that has benefited the students the most is creating worksheets of "The most important things to remember about__________." Many of these students get overwhelmed with the amount of information and words presented to them in class. Most cannot pick out the most important information. Completing study guides are very frustrating to them. By using " The most important info" forms students have the correct information to study in an easy to read format.
Note: We, as a group, complete the "The most important information" Forms. We also write in memory strategies onto the paper.
(i.e. They had to remember that the French troops made their camp next to a river...so we drew French Fries next to the river. It made them all laugh, but they also remembered it for the test. We have also done a "Decompose" rap, also lots of fun...Students still come up to me two years later and tell me what decompose means "word for word".)
Once that is complete we make up matching games with the definitions/information.
This way the students get multiple exposures to the same information in multiple ways. Let me know if you have any questions.
Be careful not teach the same way the classroom teacher would teach a direct lesson, but a fun innovative way that stimulated comprehensions and recall.
