I work in the public schools and receive $2500/yearly so I must maintain my CCC to receive the stipend. Even if my school system didn't provide a stipend, I couldn't imagine not having and keeping them. Without them, I would be closing doors to many opportunities outside of the school system. Case in point. After receiving my Master's in 2002, I completed my CF year in the public schools. At the end of that school year a wonderful opportunity came along that required applicants to have their CCC. Because I had them, I was able to apply for and obtain that position. I've since gone back to the public schools mainly because my system has an awesome retirement pkg but I wouldn't have had that opportunity if I hadn't had them. Although you work in the public school system and it sounds like you don't have any plans to leave, you never know what offer may present itself in the future. ASHA does so many more things for the profession than we know so I wouldn't go as far to say they do nothing. If possible, find a way to fit it in your budget even if it means giving up some of your "mad money" or put a few dollars away per pay and place in a savings account so you have the money at the end of the year.
