When I was applying to graduate school this was a concern of mine, too. An adviser told me this:
If your GPA is only ok, then take a graduate level class that you know you can get an "A" in. This demonstrates that you are competent at the graduate level. Also, make sure your letters of recommendation are from professors. The graduate program wants to know that you can handle their program. Though a former employer may have wonderful things to say about you, it doesn't truly represent your performance in an academic setting. And finally, she said to retake the GRE if the score is not competitive enough. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
