looking for feedback on differentiating SLP from an Eng. teacher
i work at an alternative high school so my guys are bd/eb and have more sensitive topics.
my prob. my speech kids really aren't different from the rest of the school in terms of speech/lang goals. they are all pretty low. but those who qualify for speech are ones who received it from their former school.
my one student has speech minutes from transferring from a more reputable school but missed class a lot and avoids doing hw esp. Eng. so he's a lang kid also bilingual
i do current event articles with him highlighting main points, annotating, defining unknown vocab., giving synonyms for some, and being able to have a discussion.
now after his last IEP i decided to incorporate some EN assignments. his teacher asked what i did that i would make a difference and he was like, yeah i do the same thing.
so my question "what IS the difference that I make from an EN teacher?"
- breaking down the work
- giving him that 1:1 time
- going at a slower pace
am i a glorified En. tutor?
i'm sure the teacher can understand the literature more than i can - esp. the symbolism of some stuff. should i have majored in EN literature instead?
i have also done more functional activities/motivator activities - job related stuff-interviewing techniques, sports articles, rappers - i delete the criminal stuff-mostly drugs and keep the fact that some went to college - which is really not attainable for some of these kids. but to look for something to motivate them - tech school/community college - and do something with their life.
please provide your thoughts
