Hi, I think you should come work for my district - and yes, we are hiring! My district completely supports continuing professional development. Every month the district SLPs meet for an entire day, during which we complete ASHA continuing education seminars - past topics have included RTI, Childhood Apraxia of speech, Phonology, Autism, Vocabulary and Language instruction in children and adolescents, and Fluency. In addition to our monthly department meetings, the district sends us to annual conferences (for example ASHA and ASHA Schools) yearly. Besides traveling to conferences, we have brought continuing education opportunities in to our district as well. A few years ago we paid to bring Dr. Barbara Hodson in for a 2 day seminar on childhood phonology. This year we brought Pyramid Educational Services in to provide a 2 day seminar on Picture Exchange Communication. This year I also traveled to Seattle to receive training in the PROMPT system. So, I feel that I work for a wonderfully progressive district that values continuing education as a means to providing the best possible services to students. And by the way, I don't work for a large district - I'm one of five SLPs on staff (we really need a sixth SLP though!). I'm sorry that all districts don't have the same wonderful opportunities that mine does, but I hope that this does not stop you from trying to further your skills. There is money available for continuing education, through the form of federal grants and donations, so work to enlighten your district about the benefits of having highly qualified staff on hand.
