I do a slightly different approach with middle school. Candy goes over well. Another thing I do for students that may not be excited to come to see me is let their performance determine when they can go. I say when they get 10 good answers or when we finish this sheet etc. I've also given different types of questions different point values. If it was a harder question or took a longer time to answer it would be worth more points. I could also give bonus points for a really good answer or something else positive. I usually estimated the points based on how long it would take so it would be around the right time frame. Another thing I'd do is play uno or pick up sticks and when it was my turn they'd answer a few questions etc. I'd usually give them a choice if they wanted to play a game while they did it or get done faster. I'd rather get 15 minutes of quality work time than 20 minutes of complaining or limited effort.
