I have been experimenting with using rubrics to track progress on social communication goals. I talk with the teacher and devise a rubric that includes what specifically the student is doing at this time as #1. Where the teacher wants the student to perform is #4. and #2 and #3 are the steps to get from 1 to 4. Then you can use direct teaching, social stories, suggestions to the teacher and check the student's progress periodically with the teacher using the rubric, e.g. "This is where you thought he was functioning in Jan. Do you see him moving toward 2 or 3? I write details in the margin and brainstorm with her for what else to try. I don't usually see these students regularly, maybe only 2-3 times a semester. Maybe this would be more like response to intervention.
