Thought For Today – “Click Bait”
What was your first thought when you read that subject heading for today? I would imagine some of you were puzzled, while yet others might have tried to make some educated guesses on where I was going to go with hit, am I right? Well if you define it, “Click Bait” is those pesky little pop up ads when you are surfing online that keeps popping up trying to sell you something, or trying to get you to take a survey to win something, etc…This thought actually came to me this past Sunday while I was sitting in Church at New Life Church. The Pastor’s (Pastor Rick Bezek) message for that day was about “Click Bait” and the things that distract or delay you in life from you destiny. He had a really good prop set up in that the choir played excerpts of songs that had the word “dream” in them. The he started to speak about dream killers. It was a very powerful message I thought. However, I am going to go into a little bit different of a direction with my message. I am going to focus on some of the actual people in the Bible who “clicked on the click bait” that popped up in front of them, and how it affected their lives afterwards. It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about “Click Bait.” And AMEN goes right here! Now when you start talking about “Bait,” what exactly are we referring to? Fishermen uses “bait” to catch fish don’t they? Some fishermen use earthworms, small minnows, frogs, crayfish, jigs, etc… to attract the attention of the fish. Hunters use a little bit different type of “bait” don’t they? Some will use really well planned out food plots they plant with some or all of the foods the animals they hunt likes. For deer, garden veggies, especially corn. For beavers, hunters will use the beaver’s favorite kind of trees. Turkey hunters will use, turkey decoys, plus a turkey call that will lure them close enough to get a good shot. The list goes on and on, what “bait” different people use. Even humans use certain types of “bait” to attract the opposite sex for romantic relationships with the intent of marriage, well a lot of the time LOL! And AMEN goes right here too!
Let’s dive into some of the Biblical examples of “Click Bait” that took place before and after Jesus Christ being born. I guess in my mind at least, the first example of this would be when Satan was still in Heaven and still known as Lucifer. During the time when he still was highly regarded by God. Now remember, Lucifer was the “angelic” one. If you read the Biblical description of him, he was a sight to see! The word “Lucifer” in some Hebrew translations means “shining one.” His official title if you will, was that he was minister of praise and worship, or minister over music however you would like to view it. He was created to dwell eternally in the throne room of Heaven, in the very presence of God. “Okay, okay, okay Carlos, if he was this high and mighty, what could he have done that was so bad that God kicked him out of Heaven?” Lucifer made the mistake of not ignoring the “Click Bait” (in this case pride) that popped up as he was worshipping God, like all the other Angels. The “Click Bait” or “distraction” that caught Lucifer’s attention was pride. He saw how all the other Angels worshiped God and started to listen to that Pride. “You were created to be worshipped too! Heck, you should have all the Angels worshipping and praising you too! This went on long enough without reprimand by Lucifer, that it grew and grew until he decided to act on it. And then there was rebellion and war in Heaven. The next example of Biblical “Click Bait” would be after God had created the Garden of Eden, and then Adam and Eve. They literally had EVERYTHING they “needed” in this Garden! God had already planted every seed of every plant that He wanted to be in the Garden. However, God did not allow them to bloom and bear fruit by allowing rain to fall upon them until He had created what is known as a “manager.” It was God’s intention that the Garden of Eden would operate exactly like Heaven does. And He gave Adam the power or ability, in His own likeness. In other words, Adam had the power to create from nothing, things by just speaking them into existence. Think about that for a moment, God wanted man to be able to possess the power to create with simply speaking a certain thing on earth, and it would be backed up in Heaven. “You are healed!” Heaven – “Done!” “Your crops are planted, and now they blossomed into bearing fruit, (or vegetables, corn, soybeans, wheat, or whatever),” Heaven – “Done!” Then comes along Eve, who God created to be Adam’s helpmate (aka wife). She just happens to be walking in the Garden in an area she should not have been. I can see her admiring the beauty and “bounty” of the Garden, when a “Click Bait” pop up happened, Satan (now that he has been kicked out of Heaven and cast down unto Earth), pops up. Instead of Eve figuratively speaking, clicking the “X” to exit off of the “Click Bait,” she hits “OK”. Well we all know how that turned out…..
The next example of “Click Bait” in the Biblical days that I will talk about, are the Israelites. As I have mentioned so many times in my “Thoughts For Todays,” they were God’s “chosen people.” Now think about that for a moment? You are God’s chosen people, of all people on the face of the earth, you have the favor of the Creator on your side. Common sense kicking in here, there would be NOTHING that this group of people couldn’t do as long as it fell within the guidelines that God had laid out for them. Guidelines that were set in place to make them a great nation. But that is not what happened to the Israelites is it? All throughout their history in the Bible they just couldn’t seem to stay focused could they? It was as if they were like the Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence movie “Life” where the actor in prison with them name was “can’t get right.” The Israelites just couldn’t get it right could they. God stepped in multiple times, rescuing them and protecting them from everything you could think of, and they still couldn’t bask in the sunlight of their destiny. As the old saying goes, “you had ONE job!” LOL! The Israelites’ job was simple, live by God’s commandments and their lives for thousands of generations would be Blessed. But the “Click Bait” struck again! In this case, it was the distraction of turning away from God’s covenant with them, and living their lives the way they wanted to. Sin ran amuck, and more and more of them slowly but surely turned away from God, and in the process unleashing curse after curse, destruction after destruction, chaos after chaos upon them and the generations that followed them. Bringing this closer to home, we are distracted everyday by “Click Bait,” in the form of greed, perversion, idol god worshipping, etc…As a human race, we click the “OK” button as opposed to the “X” at a rate I would bet of 100 to 1 each and every day. Our government uses “Click Bait” to influence our thoughts, and actions to force their agendas upon us. Special interests groups, businesses, terrorists, use forms of “Click Bait” to influence us in to making rash and often life altering knee jerk decisions whose consequences haunt us years after the original decision made. “Click Bait” will always be a part of our society until the Good Lord comes back for his Church (aka Christian followers). We as a people need to learn to stay focused on God and not get sidetracked or distracted by the “Click Bait.” Can I leave you with a question to ponder today if I may?
“Which are you clicking, the “X” or the “Okay??” Can I get an Amen?
“Today, chose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that exactly what HE did for us on the Cross?”
