I learned a lot from Jr Garrison and Jr Lewis. Even now as a old geezer roping in my home pen, I can still hear those guys hollering at me at ways to better my horsemanship and roping skills. Jr always had time to help. Jr was a good horseman, I think he learned from Slim Whaley. In 1970, he won the title riding that good paint horse that I can remember as one of the best. Mel Potter brought that horse a few years later. Watching Jr and Zane Tibbetts work their horses was a very good learning experience. They use to haul together. Rest in Peace Jr.
I don't think I have seen a horse stop harder and destroy calves when they hit the end of the rope any more then the gray horse Baby Huey rode in the 70's.

I know we are talking about two Jrs. Jr Lewis could buy some amateur roper's horse who looked liked a $1500 dink and make him look like a star. He knew what he wanted in a horse. Your right right Roany that gray horse was about as good as they come. He may not been fast afoot , but he scored great and sure stopped. He had a App horse that worked like a dead ringer to gray. I didn't see those two horses he had at the end. One was the horse of the year and the other was close behind. Bet they had that same stamp as Grey!

If I remember right he bought that gray horse off some amateur guy. Horse didn't stop or work the rope when he bought him. I saw him a lot in the midwest and there was times I thought they would have to cart those calves out of the arena.

I remember watching the NFR a number of years ago and if I recall correctly Troy Pruitt was riding a Junior Lewis horse there. If I remember right I think they said he was only four years old. I remember him having some issues with the horse there which is to be expected with a four-year-old in that building

I believe the horse Troy rode was called Art. And the other horse Junior Lewis had then was called Batman. Bud Ford, Ty Hays, and several others rode Batman. He had been Terry Postrach's practice horse at one time before Junior got him.
When I first got out of college I worked in Duncan for a few weeks and Junior Garrison let me keep my mare at his place at the Y north of town. Don Smith and Gale Turner were working for him at the time and they were training/selling roping horses and rodeoing. Lots of activity around that place in those days.

About 25 years ago Junior called up a guy I knew and he was telling me Jr was bragging about this horse he had and wanted to sell it to him. He said they talked on the phone for quite awhile and he finally asked Jr. What was the horse's problem.
Junior finally told him, I guarantee if he don't buck you off before you get to rope the calf you will win the roping on him.

The horse they called Art was 10 when Jr. Lewis got him but he had never been to more than a local roping and never been out of Nowata Co. Ok. Everybody around there tried to buy him for a fraction of what he was worth. Finally Art said he would sell him if he brought enough to buy a brand new truck. Somebody hooked him up with Jr. and I think he bought a pretty nice new truck.
