hey guys, I haven't been at this training deal very long, and am having a few issues, and was hoping to get some input from you guys. I have a 4 year old gelding that I have started tracking the sled on. He tracks it really well, but always rolls right up on it and doesn't want to rate off of it. I am really not sure what method I should be using in order to teach him to rate off of it. Was thinking that by stopping and backing him every time he doesn't rate off it might be the trick, but didn't want to make a mistake by doing that if it wasn't correct. Been working him at a trot and walk up to this point. Really just trying to make a breakaway horse out of him if that helps any. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
You have any live cattle to track? I use to take a young horse and track old roping calves around the arena about 6 days a week for 2 months before I ever throwed a rope off of them. They always turned out to be good trackers and raters.

You can write everything I know about training a rope hors
on a cigarette paper and still have room for half the names of everybody that lives in Mutual. I apologize for using team roping references, but there ain't much calf roping on TV. I read article about Clay O roping on young horses. When he first started roping behind a header, he would make the corner and stop them. I believe he said it help them get collected. So my vote is yes but the most important thing is that they let you throw your everytime.
