I always thought dressage had its roots in war. A calvaryman needed a really broke horse to keep him alive. One that would respond to his every cue. Especially before guns, a horse needed tpo respond to the slightest comman to avoid the pikes, spears and other weapons that ground troops might employ. If you watch Quarter Horse racing its not hard to envision yourself slogging thru mud and seeing 2-3 hundred calavry charging you with sabers drawn.
