If anyone wants to give me some pointers below is a video of a few runs. I’m roping in the 14 . I can see a pattern of figure eighting a back leg. Not sure if my loop is to flat or to big. I feel like my spoke is a little shorter than normal. I have also wondered if my delivery is to far in front of my face or if Its better to get more curl or action releasing more to the side. Most of my practice the last 3 months has been breakaway only on a sled and some bigger dairy calves but I think I need to shake my horse back a little after tying to stop him from rubbing rope and pawing. My other question might be that I noticed a few calves kicking when I gather the back legs to tie. I’m not sure if that’s due to them being on the fresher side or if my horse leaving a little slack in it has something to do with that. Anyway, any advice is appreciated and I would like to go to a clinic this summer or get some lessons. I live 80 miles west of Austin. Thanks,

I would try to string faster, as soon as the calf is off his feet let go of the flank and get your string and try to be stringing and be sitting down as he hits the ground
Sounds good. Thanks I could tell I held on to flank to long but good tip on stringer faster and sitting down. Will work on it

Try knot roping some bigger and stronger fresh calves weighing at least 220lbs. It doesn't take much of horse to get by on 140 - 150 lbs calves. You handle your rope great. You need a little more help from your horse. Try to put some set in him. --Previous Message-- : nice runs..... : : --Previous Message-- : If anyone wants to give me some pointers : below : is a video of a few runs. I’m roping in the : 14 . Sounds good Jim Bob, vaquero, I am getting a few heavier calves in the next week. A friend was selling some they can't tie down anymore and figure I can knot and bw rope them for a long time and turn them out then get my money back on them. I was still wondering if anyone could tell me why I figure 8 the back leg. The last 2 ropings I've done it twice, thanks again --Previous Message-- : : Try knot roping some bigger and stronger : fresh calves weighing at least 220lbs. that's a really big loop on jersies...watch that video..its a wonder u don't get more back legs..i learned to rope on goats..about the size of those jersies...I still use a small loop..you know that's a pretty nice horse he does everything pretty good..just not whole heartedly..if u could attend one of CR's schools or that school marty miller is having soon it would be good..martys school is for the horse...I bet it'd be worth the money..there is an old man named dale carroll who still ropes in the 14's..he is about 80 now but he had a video that was so good, if u could find it...he had a way of running down the rope, jamming his left hand into that calves neck..pull back to get slack and then pop the slack to the horse w/his right hand..then whirled and flanked the calf,,,really made that horse keep pulling that extra step back..he coukld do it so smooth..i have wanted to ask him at the ropings if he did that evey time in the practice pen..but he kind of cranky...lol..in the 14's a horse only has to take about three steps back..pull while ur flanking..then hold their head...you rope pretty good...I bet ur not too long for the 14's....

Thanks Hack. I will work on using a smaller loop. I would love to go to one of CRs or Marty's schools but do they ever have them in TX I think Mizzu and OK little to far for me. Stephenville UC roping was my 5th calf roping to enter. It was first time I really put 2 runs together. Had a 12, 14 but last run was a 26 with the leg. Before then my best run was a 17. This gray is 17 and good for me to learn on. I know I could get him working better owner before me just BW roped on him and he had slight joint pain in his hocks. I haven't injected him yet but give him ichon once a month for now. He may not get down real hard but at the same time I know a school could help me get him working better.
in the 14..he don't need to stop really hard..worst thing is to wreck them jersies where they won't get up...just get stopped and back up 3 steps..a guy told me my horse bull winkle didn't stop..he just quit running..like earl Campbell back in the day..he could cross the goal line and not take 2 more steps...long as he don't stop on his front end..i don't care...bull has back abkle and hock problems and im not going to make him get in the ground..the better u rope though the better he stops...ive had a couple guys on him who roped in prca, and he really works then..probably the same w/that grey horse...

I personally thought you were to good to be in the 14. You handle your rope really well and tie decent. You have a big advantage over the older fellas with your speed. Don't take that wrong I am not upset with you for being in there, I think when a young guy puts one together there is no way the old guys can place in a round and obviously you weren't the only young guy in there. I agree with both posts about smaller loops and more set in your horse, Also try shortening your spoke. --Previous Message-- : Thanks Hack. I will work on using a smaller : loop.
