“This is the day that the Lord has made! I will rejoice and be glad in it!”
A Christian Cowboy Perspective:
Thoughts For Today – “Take the time, to enjoy the time, while you still have time!”
How many times have you said to yourself “I’ll do that tomorrow, or I got plenty of time to do that?” There is an old saying that goes “never put off till tomorrow, what needs to be done today.” And that is because none of us are promised tomorrow, we never know when it is our time. What’s even worse, are those people who don’t take the time to enjoy their lives while they still have time. I have to admit that I’ve been guilty of it many times before. It is easy to get caught up in the everyday hustle and bustle of “I need to do this, or I need to do that” and lose sight of the fact that you forgot the important things. I’ve said it before, I really and truly believe that one of the very reasons the older generations (50’s, 60’s, and the 70’s) were a lot happier because there wasn’t as much stress, chaos, and distractions due to all the advanced technology we now have. Oh don’t get me wrong, technology is a good thing too, the advances in the medical technology (artificial hearts, prosthetics, mobile medical miracles, just to name a few) have made people live longer, more efficient, and in a lot of cases more independent. What I’m talking about, are things like when you had to be creative in order to have fun. Especially children, because this was the time before cell phones, Xbox 360’s, and the concept of personal computers were just now being developed and not very many people had them. I remember when I was in my early teens (yeah I know that was a few moons ago LOL), and especially during the summertime, we’d leave the house a lot of times at daybreak wandering all over the neighborhood and didn’t return until dusk dark. Times have definitely changed, because you can’t hardly allow your kids to play in the front yard because of sick and dangerous people lurking around. It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed in my heart this morning to talk about, “Take the time, to enjoy the time, while you still have time!” and AMEN goes right here!
We learned a lot of independence, we got our exercise in for the day, and most of all we were having the time of our lives. I can remember when I lived with my mom, my “posse” if you will, that consisted of my cousins and other neighborhood friends would first ride our bikes up to the local elementary school for two a day football practices. Then we’d ride them back home and sometimes go fishing in creeks, ponds, and lakes anywhere we could find that was close. I remember going and exploring if you will, picking wild plumbs, pears, apples, berries, etc….no not to bring home for pies lol, we’d sit there and eat them until we were sick to our stomachs LOL! That also brings back a not so fond memory that taught me a very valuable lesson about “dipping.” One of my buddies chewed tobacco ( Redman or Levi Garrett if I’m not mistaken). He would always offer us a “pinch” of it and we’d always decline. He would tell us it will make you meaner and tougher like him. (Side note: that should have been our clue to not try it, because I don’t recall him being all that tough from memory lol). Well one particular time I decided to “what the heck, why not try it just once?” BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!! First of all, it was a very HOT HOT HOT summer, in the high 90’s and low 100’s and high humidity to boot! And remember, we had to ride our bikes about 4-5 miles one way to and from football practice, TWO A DAYS! Well my homie “Lucky” forgot to tell us one very important tidbit of info in this whole “chawing” deal, to spit the juice out and DON’T swallow it! Each of us, Twan, Kerry, and a few others, took a “pinch” and he showed us how to put it in the very back side of our inner jaw, then told us “now just chew on it.” Well as you can imagine, we were doing just fine for the first 5-10 minutes until we had swallowed enough of that juice to turn out stomachs inside out! I will spare you the gory details of the aftermath, but I will just say that the lunch we had eaten didn’t make it home with us that day. I am still thanking God that I actually MADE IT HOME, because I had my head down between my handlebars the entire time because everytime I looked up I got dizzy LOL! Needless to say, that was the first and very LAST time I had any desire to chaw tobaccee LOL!
Not taking the time to enjoy the time you’ve been blessed with, or as another old saying goes “to smell the roses,” will take a huge toll on your health both Physically, Emotionally, and would you even believe “Spiritually” too? If you are constantly on the go and not ever taking time to relax and enjoy life, you will shorten your life significantly. I firmly believe that people who take at least one family vacation a year and get away from their surroundings for a time period, are a lot happier and healthier people too as a whole. You need that time to unwind and recharge your batteries so to speak. Those that are fortunate enough to get to take more than one are even more happier and better prepared to deal with the everyday stress that “life” brings. A huge myth, is that a lot of people think they can’t afford to take vacations. You might not be able to afford going to Europe or France, or Alaska, but you can take a vacation! Even if you can’t afford to leave your town, take a week off work and do absolutely NOTHING or, just find something fun to do everyday of that entire week you took off. Sleep late, take scenic drives around the state, go eat at a restaurant halfway across the state, in other words BE CREATIVE. As long as it is something you’ve never done, it can still fall under the category of a “vacation!” I have to admit that I am the worst about this, always talking myself out of it because I can’t afford it right now type of mentality. I nolonger will have this attitude, from now on I am going to do spontaneous things to protect my sanity and happiness. I plan to start soon, taking short and even long getaways in and out of the state and just be very creative about doing it. People think rich people are more happier because they can afford to take vacations more frequently and do whatever they want to do. That is not always the case, I know a lot of rich people who are just as miserable as the poorest person, because they have a whole different kind of stress in their lives. Some of them are so busy that they can’t even take a vacation. In order to live a life as free of stress as possible, you have to, I mean absolutely HAVE TO make time to just unwind, recharge, clear your mind, have fun, and stop sweating the small stuff! You will have PLENTY of opportunities to sweat BIG stuff so don’t waste any additional time sweating the small stuff. Find you something, that calms you and brings you peace. A vacation is nice, but I’m more talking about something on a regular basis that you can engage in that brings you peace. Mine would be being at my barn, there’s just something about the peace and tranquility that when I’m there especially alone that just puts my mind at peace. Even when I’m cleaning stalls, brushing and feeding my horses, roping a bale of hay, or even just sitting in one of my chairs enjoying the breeze blowing thru the breezeway, that is so relaxing and peaceful to me that I can’t even put it into words. Find the thing that brings you the most peace and do it as often as possible! Can I leave you with at question?
“Are you taking the time, to enjoy your time, while you still have the time?”
Can I get a few Amen’s????
