A Christian Cowboy Perspective:
Thought For Today – “Beware of the Sandpaper people”
By Carlos C. Brown
Pop Quiz time! By a show of virtual hands, how many of you know what the purpose of sandpaper is? Come on now, this is an easy one! As I have stated before, I receive my subjects from all different kinds of methods. I was reading a spiritual email from a friend and it had that term “Sandpaper People” in there. The term is defined as: “Those people who rub you the wrong way everytime they come around you.” We all have that one, or in some cases two, three, or more people, who everytime you see them your first thought is “Lawd, Lawd, LAWD, anybody but them, not now, I am not in the mood for this person.” And it is for good reason, because everytime you see them their lifelong, or that very moment in time mission at least, seems to be “to rub you the wrong way, or to get on your nerves” as much as they can. It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “Beware of The Sandpaper People!” And AMEN goes right here! Bullying has been catapulted into the mainstream media here lately due to some very high profile cases involving extreme bullying. Young people are committing suicide as a result of it, because they have reached out for help, only to find that there was none to be found at least in their minds, or that it wasn’t effect enough. It is a very sad day when young children are bullied to the point of wanting to take their own lives as a method of escaping the bullying. Ironically, it is not limited to young children, even adults on the most masculine level (NFL Football Players) have recently been revealed to also undergo all different types of bullying, that is known as “hazing.” In my opinion, bullying is bullying nomatter how you dress it up to sound better for public opinion. But why, what have you done to this person that lives to just rub you the wrong way? In a lot or most cases, absolutely nothing at all. Some people bully because they were or ARE bullied themselves. Other people bully just because they seem to get off on having someone fear them. You couldn’t come home in my mother’s house if she found out you had been bullied and didn’t fight back. Her motto was, “if someone hits you, you hit them back. Don’t you ever let me find out you are running scared from anyone because you will be running the rest of your life from people. I don’t care if you get your butt whipped all the way home, as long as your fought back that’s all I care about.” I had to fight almost everyday in elementary school, I was the biggest kid in school (height wise) and it seemed that all the other boys thought they could make a name for themselves if the beat up the biggest kid in school LOL! Well needless to say, they found out the hard way that they were sadly mistaken! And AMEN goes right here too LOL!
In order to understand why these people make it their mission to try to intentionally and purposefully make your life miserable, you have to really know the person on a deeper level than just a “hi and bye” basis. This helps you to recognize, understand, and evaluate what it is they have against you that results in them wanting to make your life miserable. And sadly, in a lot of cases you’ve done absolutely nothing to them but be nice and even that can cause them to treat you that way. Why, because they are unhappy with themselves and jealous of you for some reason. Your popularity, what you drive, what you wear, who your significant other might be, the fact that you are always, or seem to always been in a happy positive mood, and yes even the fact that you have a strong relationship with God! How crazy is it that there are people who will try to make your life miserable just because you proudly display your love for Jesus Christ! “Sandpaper People” have something going on in their lives that is not right nor good making them lash out at other people, usually weaker people, because they aren’t big and bad enough to mess with people they know who won’t tolerate their “sanding action.” They always pick on someone weaker, reserved, withdrawn, and or smaller. Because they are “safe bets” for them not to retaliate. If I had to pike someone from the Bible to label as being the “Sandpaper People,” I would have to start with Pharaoh and the Egyptians in regards to the Israelites. As if it wasn’t enough to enslave this entire race of people, the Egyptians treated them very poorly. They worked them very hard from sunup to sundown, the abused them, rationed their water and their food, mocked their belief in God and even tried to make them worship their idol statues. I could also throw ole Satan in this category of being a “Sandpaper Person.” If you think about it, isn’t it exactly what he does to us? He always shows up when we least expect him to, he pokes and prods us with temptations, mockery, even kicks us while we are already down, trying to get us to tap out and worship him as opposed to God. Those out there who don’t believe in God don’t worry, he’s not interested in you because in his mind he already has your eternity sewn up in his back pocket.
Even Jesus Christ had his share of “Sandpaper People” in His life to deal with too. Those who didn’t believe He was the “Son of Man,” and those in power who were jealous of His powers and influence. They did everything they could to rub Jesus the wrong way, but it was all to no avail, as Jesus’ mentality was to turn the other cheek and let God deal with them. Sometimes getting revenge on the “Sandpaper People” if you will, is as simple as finding out what their inner battle or conflict they are dealing with is and trying to help them thru it. But in the more extreme cases, you just have to Pray for them and do your best to avoid, or not allow yourself to go around the places you know they frequent. Think about the Samaritan woman at the well? Would you not categorize her behavior towards Jesus as being difficult and trying to rub Jesus the wrong way? “You Jews don’t have anything to do with us unless you need something.” How did Jesus change her attitude? He simply asked where her husband was didn’t He? Her attitude then changed to, (Paraphrasing here) “Umm, I’m sorry sir, what was the question again could you repeat it? Where is my hu, huh, hus…husband? Well you see, I mean I don’t really have one of those right now but I’m working on it!” LOL! There is always a hidden motive behind “Sandpaper People’s” madness, you just have to figure out what it is. There will come a time in this “Sandpaper Person’s” life where something will trigger them to stop rubbing people the wrong way, and in this day and age, it should happen sooner than later, because people’s tolerance span of this type of behavior is becoming more and more short! Kids going to school and trying to and in a lot of cases succeeding in shooting their abusers while at the same time killing innocent bystanders. And in the adults, some of the same methods as well as reporting it to the authorities. Turning the other cheek just does not work in this day and age, you have to stand up for yourself even if it is just verbal “sanding.” God has His methods also of dealing with these kind of people, He will fix it to where the very thing this person is doing to others, they will find themselves victims of that very same offense! As the Bible says, “Whatsoever a man sow, so shall he reap,” and as we all know, God’s word is eternal and God doesn’t lie. If He said it, you can bet your life that it WILL happen! So when “Sandpaper People” come your way, try your best to “kill them with kindness” first, and if that doesn’t work, then avoid them, and if that doesn’t work, turn it over to God and then sit back and let God work! Can I leave you with a question to ponder if I may?
“Are you guilty of allowing the “Sandpaper People” in your life to hold your prisoner?”
Can I get an Amen???
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ 110%! Afterall, isn’t that EXACTLY what HE did for US on the Cross at Calvary?”
