The Christian Cowboy Perspective:
Thought For Today – “You Can Lean On Me…”
Have you seen that 80’s movie with Morgan Freeman “Lean On Me,” where he is a high school principal named Joe Clark in a very tough district of kids who were the outcasts of their school? The school was full of thugs, gangs, drug heads, etc…and Morgan Freeman was sent there to clean it up, which he did do by the end of the movie. His tactics were very extreme and definitely not commonplace at the time, but his mentality was “extreme conditions require extreme measures!” and AMEN goes right here! It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “You Can Lean On Me..” And AMEN goes right here too! When he first took control over the school, he wasn’t the most popular person there right off the bat with his tactics. Even a lot of the teachers were either ready to quit or strangle him or both! The last thing they were thinking, was “Leaning on him” LOL! Ironically before Joe Clark (aka Morgan Freeman) took over as principal, the faculty were at their wits end from dealing with all the unruly students and in dire need of someone to “Lean on.” Everyone will face a time in their lives when they need someone to lean on. Who that someone is, will depend on the friend base that person has. And it is very essential that you choose your “Lean on” person very carefully as to make sure you pick someone not only worthy of depending on, but also reliable too. There is nothing worse than assuming that you can depend on a certain person, only to find out that they won’t be there when you need them the most. However, it is excusable for an emergency of some sort to prevent that person to not be there once in a blue moon. But if everytime you need them they have and emergency, or an excuse to not be there, then you didn’t evaluate them properly to begin with...
The responsibility this person(s) will have during their “Lean on” period, can range from just someone to talk to and bounce ideas floating around in your head, to physically, emotionally, and even financially needing their help. The trusted person should take that responsibility very serious too, because they might need that very someone, or just someone in general, themselves to lean on at any given time in their lives. Most people will only have one or a couple of people they trust with the lean on responsibilities, which is very wise considering the ramifications if they don’t choose wisely. To some people, calling on someone they considered to be a “Lean on” person, and that person happens to not be available they might start trying to call people who aren’t, and that can result in devastating results. Let’s look at a few Biblical failed “Lean on me” moments so you can get a good idea of how devastating it can be….How about Adam and Eve? I’m sure at some point during the early stages of their companionship, Adam was confident that Eve would be his “ride or die” chick/wife/helpmate, etc… however you want to describe it? But when he needed her the most, where was she, she was being beguiled (aka fooled, tricked, hoodwinked, bamboozled, etc…) by the serpent in the Garden of Eden. Well, we all know how that turned out right? The people of Israel, aka “God’s Chosen People.” When Moses led them from bondage from Pharaoh’s enslavement of 400 years acting on God’s instructions, it would be easy to assume that they assured Moses that they would be his “Lean on” people out of appreciation right? But if you read your Bibles, you know that didn’t last very long did it? What was the end result when they started turning away from God and looking to false idols, living anyway they wanted to, and especially turning away from God’s commandments? They ended up having to wander around in the wilderness for forty more long years. This was after being freed from 4 generations of slavery under Pharaoh in Egypt. The best one of all, is when the Disciples betrayed Jesus Christ. This has to be the ultimate “You can lean on me” fail. Here they were walking and talking with of all people, the Son of man Jesus Christ himself everyday. They witnessed all of his Preaching and Teaching, Miracles of healing the sick, raising the dead, and feeding the hungry, and yet when He needed them the most, they were nowhere to be found. Simon Peter had been told that he would “deny Jesus Christ three times before the rooster crows,” beforehand and still did it! (read Luke 22:54-62) It hurts BIGTIME to need someone and they not be there for whatever reason when you’ve been there for them many times doesn’t it?
In getting back to my subject, I would like to pose a question to all of my readers. By a show of virtual hands, how many of you can honestly say you have more than say two “You Can Lean On Me Anytime” people in their lives? More importantly, how many people can say you are their “Lean On Me” person and that you have never let them down? It is also a very wise thing to make sure you are “Lean on” worthy too. How can you expect to have “Lean on” people in your life, if you are not trustworthy or dependable enough to BE one for someone else? And know this up front, the person who is requesting your “Lean on me” services timing, will rarely or never be convenient for you. That is why it is so important to choose this person wisely. If you are one of those people who could be labeled as “the sky is falling” all the time type, chances are you will not get good results when you do need your “Lean on me” person. Not every situation is a “Lean on me” person needed situation. It would be also wise of you to carefully evaluate your situation before you label it a “Lean on” situation. If you only request a person’s services every once in a while, you are more likely to get better results than if you call on them frequently. But what happens when no one is available in your time of need? And let’s assume that it IS a legitimate “Lean On Me” moment, what are you going to do then? There is one that you can call on who will NEVER be too busy, NEVER think “oh man here so-in-so is again with another emergency,” and NEVER not have a resolution for your situation. Now understand, this person’s “help” might not be what you envisioned, but will be exactly what you need. Who am I speaking of? No, it’s not your best friend, not your mother, your father, your sisters or brother, not your husband, or your wife, or your significant other, or anyone else for that matter, although any one of those can rescue you once in a while depending on the emergency. It is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ plain and simple that I am speaking of. He is the ONLY ONE who can be your true “Lean on person” every single time! But you have to be willing to accept His response, nomatter what it might be! Here’s a question for you, “are you willing to trust God with your “Lean On” moments?” Can I leave you with a question to ponder today?
“The next time you find yourself in a “Lean on me person needed” moment, are you willing to trust the Lord or man”?????
Can I get an Amen????
Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ 110%! Afterall, isn’t that EXACTLY what HE did for US on the CROSS??”
