The Christian Cowboy Perspective:

Thoughts For Today – “Let Your Works Speak For Itself, Not You Speak For It.”
By Carlos C. Brown
By a show of virtual hands, how many of my readers reading this Devotional right now likes to be complimented, or receive a “pat on the back” for something they have accomplished? I would be willing to bet, that most if not all of you have your hand raised if you are being totally honest. It is the human nature to be rewarded for good deeds, why do you think God has Heaven as an end reward for us if we become saved? Everyone likes to be complimented for doing good work, especially if that work required them to do anything strenuous or extreme. A good “pat on the back” to some people, is worth more than a pot of gold. Being recognized for anything you do can in some cases be taken so much to the extreme by some people, that the hip hop community has come up with a new name for it, “Thirsty”. If you look around at some people in the world, they will go to just about any extreme to be recognized for any and everything. What is it about people who want so bad to be “recognized” for even the smallest and most insignificant things, that they almost get angry if no one compliments that work or effort. Just take a scroll or two on Facebook if you don’t believe me, there are so many “thirsty” people looking for attention on that media site alone that it’s not even funny. But why? Why do people think the whole world wants to know what they are eating? What TV show or movie they are watching? Where they are driving to at any particular moment? What music they are listening to? And especially how much in love they are with the very same significant other that a lot of the times they are fighting with at the very same moment they post how good that significant other is, or how much they love them? Get my point?, it is WAY outta hand with some people. They are on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MySpace, and God knows what else looking for virtual “pats on the back” for absolutely nothing important at all 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. There are a lot of people on there who need to read their Bibles, then they would know that God doesn’t care about all that stuff, nor does He like people who like to self-promote or brag on themselves…
What God does care about is humility! In other words, “let your works speak for itself, not you speak for your works”! My late grandmother would tell us all the time, “when you do something for someone, don’t expect any thanks, and don’t brag about what you did, even if that person doesn’t appreciate what you did for them, because you are trying to build up treasures in Heaven for your good deeds, not here on earth”. That is a pretty tough pill to swallow for a teenager, to wrap their minds around in a world or society of “me first” mentality. I took that advice, and even to this day try to remember it everytime I do something for someone, nomatter how large or small the gesture is/was, and I am not even told a simple “Thank You” by the person(s). People nowadays have lost all of their courtesies that used to be common place. This new millennium mentality, that seems to run rampant with “I don’t need to say thank you because for whatever reason I was owed or entitled that generosity you showed me”, is the very reason that our world is in the chaotic shape it is in currently. Gone are the days where people actually cared about their fellow man/woman or neighbors, without expecting some sort of payment or reward for doing anything. And guess what, it shows in today’s youth too. Look around at the respect levels of today’s youth being at an all-time LOW! Today’s youth doesn’t respect anything, nor anyone, including their own parents for the most part. They are consumed with “quick fame syndrome”, meaning they will do just about anything for their “two minutes of fame”, whether it be filming themselves fighting, bullying someone, committing crimes of all sorts, setting themselves on fire, the list goes on and on. But WHY??? Why has our society gotten so far away from the wellbeing of humanity being placed up high on a pedestal of grave importance, and allowed it to be placed so far down on the food chain totem pole??? Why, Why, Why??? What happened people?
What happened to the days when it wasn’t cool to brag or boast about helping someone in need? What happened to the days where when someone was in need and people knew it, they just showed up with some sort of kind gesture that if nothing else, was an attempt to cheer the person up? Nowadays, if some people actually do attempt to do that, they go and brag to anyone who will listen about doing it, which just shows that they only did it just to be able to go out and tell the world they did it, hoping for pats on the back. I have done, and attempted to do so many “good Samaritan” gestures in my life that I never even told a soul about, because it would almost seem embarrassing to me to be bragging about helping someone in need, God tells us that’s part of being a Christian. That is a for sure sign of being “Thirsty” as the Hip Hop generation refers to it. Think about this, Jesus Christ was the epitome of a humanitarian, and from the start of His life, to the finish, you never heard Him brag about it one single time! And remember, He performed “miracles” that has yet to be topped in our day and age! If anyone had the reasons to brag about something they did, it would be Jesus Christ! Name me one other person who can turn water into wine? Notice I said “water” not grapes! Name me one person who can with just the touch of the “hem of His garment (robe), heal a woman from issues of blood that had been present for 12 long years? Name me one person, just one, who with just spitting in some dirt in His hands, making mud and placing it in a blind man’s eyes, made him able to see again or for the first time? What no takers??? Here’s a good one, name me ONE person who can feed FIVE THOUSAND hungry people at the world's record largest fish fry, with just FIVE loaves of bread and TWO fish! Still no takers huh??? Ok how about this one, surely there is someone else capable of doing this one. Name me ONE person, just ONE, who can just with voice command of three words, “Peace Be Still” calm an angry Sea and even the Winds cease to blow? Last one, name me ONE person, just ONE, who would be willing to be marched from one judgment hall to another, while carrying an old heavy rugged Cross? Then marched up on a high hill and then nailed up on that very Cross, just hanging there suffering, with a Crown of thorns on His head, having a spear stuck in His side so that all of His blood flowed out, for YOUR sins, not His, but YOURS and not brag or boast about it knowing that not one single, or very many people there watching, or in generations to come would never appreciate it? What happened? It sure got awful quiet in this crowded room??? You can hear a pin drop it is so quiet! That’s what I thought, because there ISN’T any other person who can do those things! If there was, that person would definitely be doing a lot of bragging. “Let your works speak for you, not you speak for your works”. Can I leave you with a question to ponder today?
Are you completing any good “works” for the Kingdom of Heaven, that you have not been at the very least, even “tempted” to brag or boast about? God knows what those works are if you have/are doing them, and nobody else needs to know because it won’t matter to them anyways!
Can I get an Amen???
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ 110%! Afterall, isn’t that EXACTLY what HE did for US on the CROSS???”
