Thought For Today – “And He Could Do No Mighty Work There…”
Hello again my Peeps! How are you doing this morning, good I hope? I have been listening to one of my favorite online pastor’s this week (Ron Carpenter) and his new message series on “The Code” (living in a way that honors and pleases God resulting in unlocking Heaven’s treasures God has hidden in fields here on Earth) and it has really been speaking to me about my life. This particular message, (part #6) deals with recognizing when you are in a God moment. Pastor Carpenter’s premise behind “The Code,” is that God will hide something GREAT in something (or someone) common, so that you have to honor (let me repeat that, so that you have to “H-O-N-O-R”) that common thing (or person) before you can get to the treasure He has hidden in it/them. As Pastor Ron would say, “I could stop right here and send all ya’ll home, because that little tidbit right there will preach all by itself, because some of ya’ll wouldn’t honor certain people nomatter how much that could bless you just because you have already judged them as being unworthy of God’s Blessings, Grace, Favor and Mercy because they are not “P-E-R-F-E-C-T like you are!” Now I have spoken previously about honoring people anyway, even if you have judged (yes, I said J-U-D-G-E-D) them and deemed them unworthy of being honored in the first place, because of something you know about them or their past, don’t like about them, have heard about them, maybe have even witnessed them doing, or just don’t like them at all, because of how everyone else seems to like them! Whatever your reason(s) are for judging and deeming them unworthy of honor, it doesn’t matter in God’s eyes, because He is a God of Forgiveness! Pastor Carpenter frequently makes the statement, “you can take someone who is known for acting crazy and start to honor them and they in return will start to act “honorable.” It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about…… “And He Could Do NO Mighty Works There…” and AMEN goes right here! Now hopefully you are pretty or somewhat Bible savvy and know where my subject title derived from? If not, it is from the book of Mark 6:5 verse. Talking about when Jesus when back to His own country, and despite Him being the Son of God, He could not perform any (or very few) miracles there, because all of His “peeps” could only see Him as Joseph and Mary’s boy, the son of a carpenter. I get a giggle or two out of how Pastor Ron depicts this story, “Jesus? Why are ya’ll speaking about Him as if He is someone special? He ain’t nobody, that’s Joseph and Mary’s son, the carpenter! Son of God? He ain’t no Son of God! Did I not hear about how He was the seed planted by the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary? Pfft, yeah I heard about the “scandal,” 16 year old unwed mother, pregnant and blamed it on a Spirit, but everybody looking and her male friend Joseph like a mule about to kick!” LOL! I added that last little part about the mule in there because it seemed fitting. And AMEN goes right here!
I would assume, that your first question would be, “why would God put something “great” in something common or regular and expect me to be able to recognize that greatness in that common thing/person?” It is because God doesn’t look at what we look at. The human race looks at the outside of that person/thing, but God, but God, BUT GOD, looks at the internal makings of them. “The Kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field.” In getting back to the story of the miracles of Jesus Christ, Pastor Carpenter notes how Jesus could go to some towns and people would recognize Him as the Son of God, despite looking just like those people who were oohing and ahhhhing over Him. And by that recognition by those Faithful followers, Jesus was able to clean out entire hospitals healing all that were sick and suffering. Then Jesus would go into a different town, and they only saw Him as just an ordinary Man, who in their eyes were nothing special at all. The Bible says just like in my subject line above, “and He could do NO mighty work there.” Question #2: “Did Jesus lose His power?” The answer would be NO, He did not lost His power! But because the people of that town did not recognize Him as the Son of God, they were not allowed the miracles that He was capable of performing! In the one case, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, (read Mark 10:46-52) was one of a very few who recognized that he was in a “God moment” and was not going to let it pass him by. He started to yell, “Jesus……..Jesus………..Jesus……JESUS!!!!, continually until Jesus stopped and came to see him. Bartimaeus recognized the “treasure” (aka unlimited healing power in this case) that was hidden inside of Jesus Christ, and because he did recognize it, he was healed having his eyesight restored. Yet another instance of people in the Bible not recognizing the “treasure” hidden in a field, and that they were in “God Moments,” was when the prophet Samuel was sent by God to Jesse’s house to anoint the next king of Israel. Despite Samuel being a prophet, even he didn’t recognize young David as having what it took to be a king. It wasn’t until he had approached each of Jesse’s sons, that he became puzzled that none of them (in the house) were God’s choice. David happened to be out in the field tending the sheep. As soon as Jesse called for young David and he made it in the house, God told Samuel “That is him, that’s the one I want you to anoint” in so many words.
The story of the woman at the well, (read John 4: 1-26). All Jesus wanted was drink of water, well and to minister to this Samaritan woman. But because she couldn’t recognize she was in a “God Moment” at first, she almost missed the treasure that was hidden inside Him. Jesus, “can I have a drink of water?” Her: “how are you going to drink when you don’t have anything to draw water with? The well is deep and you didn’t even bring a bucket nor even a cup.” Jesus : “May I please have a drink of water, I’m very thirsty?” Her: You Jews don’t ever associate with us unless you want something, why would I give you a drink?” Sometimes you have to get the person you are trying to help to refocus. Jesus: “Woman, where is your husband, I am tired of this attitude of yours?” Her: I don’t have a husband.” Jesus: “You’re right, you’ve had FIVE and you are living with a man right now who isn’t your husband.” Her: “I perceive you to be a prophet!” LOL! “Ya Think Sherlock?” It wasn’t until Jesus Christ started to tell her things about herself that He shouldn’t have known that she started to listen and appreciate the “treasure” He wanted to share with her that was inside of Him. In bringing this a little closer to home, I know for a fact that there are people who won’t benefit from the Devotionals I share on a daily basis, because it is ME sharing/writing them! Because of the way they perceive me, there is nothing that I could ever do to change the view or image they have of me. God Himself could materialize to them and tell them that He has been using me authentically for the past 18 years to share His Holy Word, they still would not be willing to change their view of me and see the “Treasure” hidden inside of me. That used to bother me a lot, but now I have made peace with it. And it won’t stop me from doing that I feel in my heart that I have been called to do! Afterall, they are the ones missing out not me, and ironically, those same people will share devotionals from time to time and despite what I know about them that they would not be proud of, I am still able to see the “Treasure” in their fields! One thing I have learned in my 18 going on 19 years of writing devotionals, is that you have to learn to look at people how God would look at them if you want to truly receive God’s Blessings. Everyone makes mistakes, and there is not perfect humans on a perfect God. Therefore, that means that we have to take full advantage of God’s Grace, not only for ourselves, but to give it to other people when they fall down, make mistakes, fall short of your expectations, and the Glory of God! Yes I know, I know, that’s no fun giving other people the same Grace that God gives us. You like holding that grudge, disliking that person, talking bad about this person or that person, trying to run their name and reputation into the ground because it gives you sometype or sense of power over them. Did you ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe because of their poor choices that resulted in the roads they ended up going down that you might not have gone down, is the very reason that God hid a very valuable treasure inside of them? Why? Because it would be the only way He could get you to honor that person if you know the Kingdom Principle of – “You can only get the Kingdom’s Treasure here on Earth that’s hidden in the field if you honor and respect the field it is hidden in first.” Remember about the Israelites. To this very day, despite being “God’s Chosen People,” a large number of them never got to experience the great power of Jesus Christ because they refused to accept that something so great and powerful could be materialized the way that Jesus was. #1. Born to a 16 year old virgin with no husband. #2. Born in a common manger in a barn with farm animals. #3. That the Holy Spirt impregnated His mother Mary. #4. That He took on human form and walked among us, with no apparent “Godly” physical appearance traits or characteristics that said He was the Son of God. Humans look at the outside, while God looks at the inside. From this day forward, after reading this you should be convicted with the mentality that you will look at every person you meet nomatter how rich or how poor, or how flawed and imperfect they may be as a potential dwelling place/temple full of “Kingdom Treasure” that you can access if you would just honor them the right way. Can I leave you with a question to ponder today?
Are YOU willing to look past my flaws, my mistakes, poor choices, and everything else you may know about me and my past to get to the “Treasure” God has hidden inside of me to share with you?” I am MORE than willing to do it for you! Can I get an AMEN???
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that exactly what HE did for US on the Cross?”
