Thought For Today – “Blind Ambition”
Hello again Peeps! By a show of virtual hands, how many of you would consider yourself to be a very “ambitious” person? Wow, most everyone’s hands shot up immediately! However, I did notice that there were a considerable amount of people who did not raise their hands too. Would that be because you wasn’t sure, or you thought someone might question your declaration? I heard a pastor make the statement at church this past weekend that went something like this, “If the enemy can “bind” you to one thing, he can “Blind” you to everything.” Now that right there is a powerful word isn’t it? Is there really such a thing as too much ambition, I would have to say yes there is! Lucifer proved this when he was still an Angel in Heaven and as described by many Biblical scholars to be God’s most trusted Angel at that time. It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “Blind Ambition” and AMEN goes right here! Now when you start talking about those two words, “Blind” and “Ambition,” I feel is would be best if I were to define them to give a better understanding of how I am trying to tie them together in this message. The dictionary definition of the words “Blind” is as follows: “unable to see because of injury, disease, or congenital condition; Lacking perception, awareness, or discernment.” Now the word “Ambition” is described as : “A strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work; Desire and determination to achieve success.” If you were to put those two definitions together in regards to the subject today you would get the following: “A strong desire to achieve or succeed at something that you become blind to everything else due to lacking perception, awareness, or discernment.” Those of you who read your Bibles regularly, is there anyone who comes to mind along these same lines we are discussing? Hopefully there are multiple people that comes to mind, at least for me there is. I will list a few just so you can see how this pertains to my subject matter for today. Let’s got back, waayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in the beginning just after Lucifer’s expulsion from Heaven to where God had just created the Garden of Eden, and then Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis 2: 16-17. Now remember that definition of the world “Ambition,” does “Eve” not come to mind? Well of course the women reading this would say “NO” because they know where I’m about to go with this LOL! Is there not a very STRONG case that the one thing that caused Eve to be tempted had to do with some unfounded “Ambition?” The serpent (aka Satan) didn’t twist her arm, nor did he use anytype of spell, or magic on Eve. All he simply did was present her with a golden opportunity, to have the same knowledge that God had. Ambition had everything to do with it, because the warning was “For if you do, you will surely die.” That is a pretty cut and dried warning to me! There is nothing about it that could be confusing, well to ME at least. Ambition was the motive, and it cost them (an us too) dearly…
The next example is someone I mentioned in yesterday’s devotional “The Avengers of Faith,” by the name of Saul, who would later become Paul. It is very safe to assume that Saul was a very, VERY “ambitious persecutor of the Jewish Christians in the book of Acts. The Bibles pretty much states or implies that he was very passionate about his job too! Would this not qualify him for the title of “Blind Ambition?” He So much so, that when he had his encounter with Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus he changed his heart towards the Jewish Christians without God even telling him to. Jesus never told him to stop, He simply asked him the question, “why does thou persecute Me?” As I mentioned in the devotional mentioned above, Saul wasn’t persecuting Jesus Christ, but the Jewish people who followed Christianity. What is so very powerful, is that once Saul realized who was asking him that question, he immediately fell to his knees and asked for forgiveness. From that point forward, Saul became Paul and with the same “Ambition” he used to persecute and torture Jewish Christians, he used to defend them. Paul even went out to write 13 books of the Holy Bible. The next example that comes to mind would be the Prodigals’ son in the book of Luke 15:11-32). This is a story that Jesus Christ shares with his disciples, the Pharisees and also other people as well. This is a very familiar story for those of you who read your Bibles, or attends Church services frequently as Pastors love to preach this parable. There was a man that had two sons. This man had accumulate a considerable amount of wealth that would eventually be inherited by his two sons after he died. However, his youngest became a little too “Ambitious” to see the world and all that it had to offer. One day the younger son went to his father as asked him for HIS inheritance right now. “Ummmm, Do whut nah? You say you want your what nah, “YOUR” inheritance, what makes you think it is yours when I’m still alive?” That had to be what the father had going through his mind at that very moment. Now I have stated many times that I was raised by my grandparents from age twelve on up after my sweet momma allowed me to go live with them. If you have read the stories I have told about how strict my grandfather was, how he would have reacted to such request. First let me clarify, “I” would have NEVA, eva, eva, eva, been STUPID enough to go to him and ask him such a life threatening question LOL! I life my teeth right where they are right now too much! LOL! However, the father obliged, and gave his younger son all that would come to him as inheritance and he went out on his merry way. If you know the story, you know that he squandered everything that he was given partying it up and living in luxury, even had his own “Posse” to help him squander all his father had given him. He because broke and destitute to the point of craving the very slop (scraps in laymen’s terms) that he was getting paid to feed to his employers hogs. That is a very good example of what “Blind Ambition” can lead to if you are not careful! And AMEN again goes right here!
The next example of “Blind Ambition” that comes to mind would be Goliath in the Bible in the book of 1 Samuel starting around the 17th chapter. If you were to go read the story, you would learn about Goliath, the Philistine Army’s champion GIANT warrior that as undefeated in battle. He described in height to be six cubits and a span. Translated, you are talking about 8 feet tall and about 280-340 lbs. The Israelite army did not have anyone even remotely the same size as Goliath in their camps and Goliath knew that. He was so intimidating, that not even one of the Israelite soldiers would even think about taking him on in hand to hand combat despite the King Saul’s offer of his daughter’s hand in marriage or for the entire household to never have to pay taxes again. It is safe to say that Goliath’s “Ambition” and confidence was pretty strong as he went out day after day insulting and taunting the Israelite army over and over again. Well if you know the story, then you know that young David the son of Jesse went out and faced Goliath with nothing more than a sling and just three smooth stones. I could be real technical and state that young David too was filled with “Ambition” in thinking that he could defeat a giant warrior many times his size and more experienced in battle. However, the difference in David and Goliath, is that David’s “Ambition” came from the love and respect he had for God, who was being insulted by Goliath. That gave David God’s unlimited power to not only accomplish defeating Goliath, but anything he wanted to defeat as long as he stayed focused on who he was doing it for. The mistakes that Goliath made, was that #1. He picked the wrong race/army of people to taunt and engage into battle with. #2. He “Blind Ambition” of not recognizing that David was entering the battle with God on his side. #3. Goliath overlooked David’s age, size and choice of weapon as being capable of defeating him. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from these Biblical examples of how “Blind Ambition” can be the direct result of our downfall in this day and age. How many times do you see people spend their entire lives chasing things very ambitiously, only to find that it wasn’t what they were chasing that was the real addiction it was the chase itself? A good example of this, would be people who chase love, money, sex, power, etc.. and never realize even after finding or catching what they were chasing and are totally and completely miserable. There isn’t but one thing we need to be chasing with “Ambition,” and that is after God. He is the only thing that can fill any and every void we have inside of our hearts. Nothing, let me repeat that, NOTHING else in this world can fill a void we have nomatter how much of it we acquire over our lifetime. Can I leave you with a question to ponder today if I may?
“What is your “Ambition(s)” and are you “Blindly” chasing it?”
Can I get an AMEN?
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that exactly what HE did for US on the Cross?”
