The Third Eye Perspective:
By Carlos C. Brown
Thought For Today – “Long Live Real Cowboys!”
What is it about real “Cowboys” that drive women insane when they see one? Every “Cowboy” actor that I’ve ever seen in the movies, and especially the real live Cowboys, were considered to be sex symbols? Could it be their tough ruggedness, honesty, loyalty, chivalry, or country draw when the talk or something else? Whatever it is, there’s something about “Cowboys” that make women weak in their knees when they see one! I’ve experienced it myself, and even witnessed it with others too! If you know me really well, you know that I have a certain high level of pride about being a “real” Cowboy. As the old saying goes, real Cowboys are “are a dying breed, and they are always imitated but NEVER duplicated!” Another true old saying about “Cowboys,” is that “everyone wants to be a “Cowboy” until it’s time to do “Cowboy” stuff LOL!!!” My daddy was a Cowboy, my daddy’s daddy was a Cowboy and even my son likes being Cowboy! He doesn’t ride much anymore, but he was always on a horse when he was younger and I have the pictures to prove it LOL! I like the fact that the former Razorback Basketball Coach Nolan Richardson was a Cowboy and proudly wore his Cowboy boots on the sidelines during the games he coached. And as embarrassing as it might “appear” to some of the “haters,” I am a very PROUD Diehard Dallas Cowboys fan too! LOL! It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “Long Live REAL Cowboys!” And AMEN goes right here! My mother once told me, that she knew from even before my birth, that I was destined to be a Cowboy, that my daddy “Lee Andrew Brown Jr. aka “Tuff” saw to that fact! Believe it or not, Cowboys (Real One’s) are more popular than ever before. Just look around you, Hollywood is obsessed with “Western” movies, and have even created a movie about “Cowboys and Aliens” LOL! But why, what is so attractive about the whole “Kawlboyee” persona, especially as it relates to Christianity? I’m very glad you asked, because I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who were wondering the same exact thing, or who “ just don’t get it”!
To truly understand the whole “what’s the big deal about Cowboys” discussion, you must first understand the true make up of a real Cowboy. From birth, he was groomed to be who he is, meaning his parents bought him cute little cowboy outfits, boots and a hat and a Cowboy belt buckle too, even before he was able to walk. He was then (like in mine and my son Dawson’s case) put on horses with their father’s and even their mothers too in some cases at very early ages, even in some cases before they were even walking. The minute they began to walk, and had good enough coordination and balance, they had their very own pony to ride! I am always taken back when I get to a rodeo and see a little kid being led around on a pony, or the kid being old enough to ride on his or her own! Once the kid hit the age of just before preteen age, they in most cases are trained to ride the right way, sitting up straight, feet forward, heels down and toes up, with the reins in your hands forward and low, etc. It is at this age the kids begin to be taught how to care for their horse, which teaches responsibility and even “accountability” depending on how you look at it. They also taught toughness, like if you fall off, or get bucked off, you have to get back on the horse, NO exceptions. There is no debating this one, you have to get back on the horse or it will learn that if it bucks the riders off, they will not get back on it out of fear. Horses are very intelligent animals like that! They are also taught different events that they can compete in at that age (Roping, Barrels, Poles, Goat Tying, etc…) and their “competing” career/life begins soon after. As they hit their teenage years, if they are lucky enough, they get to compete in teenage rodeos and as well as High School rodeos too. And again being taught more “life lessons” along the way. It is also at this age that some kids are now being taught the beginning aspects of how to break and train a horse from scratch. This will come in very handy in more ways than one, such as “trust, patience, toughness, hardworking ethics, effective communication, reasoning, problem solving as well as a true sense of accomplishment. I am often very impressed by kids who have learned the whole “breaking and training” aspect of being a Cowboy, as opposed to those kids whose parents tried to “buy” their rodeo success. There’s nothing wrong with your parents being able to afford you the best horses, but when their kids can break and train their own competition horses, the sense of pride that comes along with this gives them a confidence unlike anything else. As the Cowboy (or Cowgirl not to leave you Cowgirls out), becomes an adult without even realizing it you have learned so many lessons in life! But the one lesson that isn’t taught much by people other than “real” Cowboys and Cowgirls, is the “Cowboy Code”. Most people don’t even realize this even exists…
The “Cowboy Code of Ethics” if you will, is very similar to the 10 Commandments in a few ways. It is basically a “how to live a good clean life” manual, although not handed down personally by God. But a lot of, if not most of the same rules apply. Here are just a few of the key “Cowboy Code” rules that ALL of the “real” Cowboys and Cowgirls, live by. Notice I said all of the “REAL” Cowboys and Cowgirls:
#1. Believe in, worship, and respect God in every aspect of your life first and foremost. Read your Bible daily! I firmly believe that God has a special place in His heart for Cowboys, Cowgirls, and especially Horses. Read your Bibles and see how many times horses played significant roles in it.
#2. Every Cowboy in America is very proud to be an American. They honor the American Flag despite their nationality, ethnic origin, or beliefs. At EVERY rodeo, the American flag is honored, as well as the Star Spangled banner sang or played. This is also a non-negotiable occurrence!
#3. Your word should mean so much to you, that anytime you give it, you should never break it intentionally. And if circumstances beyond your control, results in you breaking it otherwise, you should do everything in your power to make it right.
#4. Treat your fellow man ( Parents, Wife, Husband, Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Children, Friends, Neighbors, etc..) exactly how you would want them to treat you, everytime.
#5. Treat your horse(s) better than you treat yourself! Because the way you treat your horse is a reflection of how you will care for or about other people believe it or not.
#6. Never be scared or afraid of hard work. It is just part of being a Cowboy or Cowgirl. Another non-negotiable aspect of Western life!
#7. When another Cowboy needs a helping hand and you got the means to help them, it should not have to be asked of you, but expected. And when you do, make sure you do it out of it being the right thing to do, not to boast or brag about to other people.
#8. Be completely honest in ALL your business dealings, never trying to beat or deceive anyone else.
#9. Respect your fellow “real” Cowboys and Cowgirls and especially that way of life too for that matter. If you don’t who will?
#10. If you see a Cowboy or Cowgirl mistreating their horses (or anything else animal wise), STOP THEM IMMEDIATELY! It will be looked upon by non-Cowboy people as a reflection on ALL Cowboys and Cowgirls not just the one in question.
#11. As I stated in the beginning of this Devotional, If you get bucked off a horse, you absolutely HAVE TO get back on him again! Otherwise, he will buck everytime and with everyone else until someone stops him/her from doing it, because he (or she) knows that you are afraid of them and that will make it hard for the next owner.
These are just some of the things that the Cowboys I know and respect believe in. I am sure there are plenty more that could be added to my list. And in my “Third Eye Perspective” way of viewing things, I would have to believe that Jesus Christ has a special place in His heart for Cowboys. We don’t ever ask for much more than a fair shot, we don’t mind working hard for making our dreams come true. For the most part, we are very simple people and don’t have to live “high on the hog,” and for the most part, we are satisfied with just having all the things we “need” as opposed to all the things we might want. Now when I make that statement, I’m again talking about “real” Cowboys and Cowgirls. Putting on a Cowboy hat, Wrangler jeans, a big belt buckle, and Cowboy boots doesn’t make you a “real” Cowboy or Cowgirl. Nomatter how much you want to think it does. A lot more responsibility comes with being a Cowboy or Cowgirl than just “looking the part”. That is why a lot of the “Drug Store” (aka fake or wannabe’s) cowboys and cowgirls fail at getting the true respect deserved. “Real” Cowboys and Cowgirls don’t Lie, Cheat, nor Steal from other people. They don’t forget to have a certain sense of pride in their family name and will do just about anything to keep from tarnishing that family name. They know that they aren’t perfect and don’t try to be, realizing that imperfection is just a fact of life! They pride themselves in being humble and honest too! When I first heard the popular rodeo saying “Long Live Cowboys,” my first thought was “Nothing will ever replace “real” Cowboys and Cowgirls”, we WILL live long because we have the Favor of God on our side! He honors us, because we NEVER cease to honor Him! We always give Him Praise and Worship, and spend lots of time talking to, and listening to Him in return. But despite that, “real” Cowboys and Cowgirls never ask for special favors! Can I leave you with a question to ponder about real “Cowboys and Cowgirls”???
Of the Cowboys and Cowgirls you know personally, based on the criteria I listed above, how many “REAL” Cowboys and Cowgirls do you know now?
Can I get an Amen Pardner?????
“Today, choose to “RIDE or DIE” with Jesus Christ!!! Afterall, isn’t that EXACTLY what HE did for US on the Cross?”
