Thought For Today – “The Undiscovered Territory”
When I got today’s subject title for today’s “Thought For Today,” I kinda hesitated for just a brief moment, because I knew that just the very title of it alone would make some people “uncomfortable.” Why? Because it is just human nature to be fearful or as I stated earlier “uncomfortable,” when facing the thought of trying something new! All the “what if’s” comes into play, and that fear of not knowing what the outcome of any new journey might be, actually prevents a lot of us from accomplishing so many things that we might otherwise accomplish. It is with this train of thought or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “The Undiscovered Territory.” And AMEN definitely goes right here! As Pastor Ron Carpenter say, “That’ll Preach Right There!” For some people, the biggest concern might be how much effort they might have to put forth in order to successfully venture into that unknown, without any guarantee of success. And yet others it might be the fact that if they do fail, how will it impact their lives? What will their family and or friends think? One thing is for sure, fearing the unknown is a very powerful deterrent for some people and so much so, that they don’t even attempt to try anything new out of fear that they will fail or that it might impact their lives in a major negative way. This also ties into a previous “Thought For Today” entitled “Living versus Just Existing.” Another reason some people find themselves just “existing” in life, is because they fear change aka “The Undiscovered Territory.” Now when you start thinking about “Undiscovered Territory,” your first thought might be that I’m talking about some foreign land or country am I right? Somewhere like Alaska, Africa, Asia where there aren’t any human or very little human occupation. Maybe your first thought was one of the many planets in our solar system? Well maybe they don’t qualify, because there might be sometype of other beings that have or are occupying them, we just might not have been made privy to their existence……or have we? Anyways, that is what comes to mind when you think about something being “Undiscovered.”
When I think about that phrase “The Undiscovered Territory,” my mind immediately started to think about some of the Biblical examples of the people being fearful or hesitant of change, like Adam and especially Eve when placed in the “Garden of Eden.” The fear of not knowing “everything God knows,” was just too much of an issue for Eve. How did that turn out for her, Adam, and especially us? Cain and Abel? Cain just could not stand not knowing why his offering to the Lord wasn’t Blessed like his brother Abel’s was. How about people of Israel? Think about this for a moment, as many of them as there were, and being that they were and are known as “God’s Chosen People,” why would they not believe without a shadow of a doubt that they could overtake the city of Canaan, aka “The Undiscovered Territory” aka “The Promised Land” with that being the case? Why would some of think it was better to go back and be content with remaining slaves after 400 years of it? Is it safe to assume that they were scared of “The Undiscovered Territory?” And since it is a movie that has been in the theatres, Noah? When God first told him to build the Ark, why did Noah hesitate? Ok maybe that was a bad example, because I could imagine if God came to you or even myself and said “Hello this is God, I want you to build this huge ship with just your family, by hand mind you, because you are going to need it in a little while,” I can only imagine how some of us would have fainted on the spot, while others might be looking up at Heaven, like a “mule about to kick” and wondering if your mind is playing tricks on you/us? LOL! But I would have to guess that the reason behind Noah’s first reaction (and ours) would be out of fear of “I can’t do that with just my bare hands Lord, it’s too hard. Nobody has ever done anything like that with their bare hands, why me?” What will people think if they see me building this big ol’ boat in my back yard? Where am I going to find the lumber to build it? But, But, BUT Lord, I’m scared of “lions, and tigers, and bears, OH MY? LOL! What if I don’t build it right and it won’t hold water and sink? What if, What if, What if, blah, blah, blah??” I’m sure there would be a lot of us making all kinds of excuses just out of fear that we couldn’t do it. And who wants to disappoint God right??? I mean, it’s not like we have ever disappointed Him before LOL! Yeah right, we disappoint Him EVERYDAY! What if David had been scared of Goliath? What if Daniel had lost his Faith in God’s unmatched power, while in the lion’s den? What if the woman with the “issue of blood for 12 long years” had been too scared, embarrassed, or too whatever to “press her way thru the crowd so she could just touch the hem of Jesus’ garment to be made whole?” What if the blind man had been too scared to approach Jesus to heal him? What if Mary and Martha were too scared or too humble to worry Jesus with bringing Lazarus back to life after he died? And the best example of all (in MY mind at least), what if Jesus, despite knowing the outcome of what would happen, after His time on earth was done, had doubts that He would actually rise again like He did on the third day, after His crucifixion? What if He had not gone thru with the crucifixion in the first place? You see how this whole “Fear of The Undiscovered Territory” thing could have possibly resulted in the most important occurrences in our past history to turning out totally differently!
Fearing change or the unknown has caused so many people to talk themselves out of trying something new, that would have benefitted them in so many positive ways. That mentality of “I can’t, I won’t, I shouldn’t,” is NOT of God, that is of Satan. God is a God of Miracles, Possibilities, and I can, I will, I did! “I can’t, I couldn’t, I won’t” is NOT a part of His vocabulary! Now to bring this closer to home for the Christian folks, when you are facing the decision to following Jesus Christ wholeheartedly or not. When you read the requirements, you might view them as “The Undiscovered Territory,” because it is something you’ve never considered doing, or have and continue to see so many others fail at, or you’ve heard it is “too hard to be a Christian”, etc….The one thing you have to do before you do anything else, is give up the “I can’t, I won’t, I shouldn’t” mentality as it relates to your ability not to be able to follow thru with the Christian journey! With an all Powerful God on our side, failure is NOT an option as long as you stay committed to giving your best effort to follow Him! Yes, you are going to have days where you experience failure, disappointment, heartaches, pain, and loss, but they good thing about that, is those are only “earthly” things. If you persevere until the end, the reward is much, MUCH greater when you get to Heaven! None of the previous things listed will be there. That is very good to know on the front end as opposed to not knowing isn’t it? And if you just HAVE TO HAVE those three “defeats” in your vocabulary, then use them in a positive way, “I can’t do that because it isn’t Christ-like, I won’t go there because that is not a place that a Christian should go, and or I shouldn’t be acting like that in public or private, because not only my fellow man, but God is watching me at all times and He sees and hears everything, including the thoughts in my mind and heart!”. Stop letting the fear of the unknown handcuff your efforts to be successful. Afterall “nothing ventured nothing gained” as the old saying goes! When you have God on your side ANYTHING is possible because He is a God of POSSIBILITIES! And more importantly, God can do ANYTHING, yes you read that correctly, I said God can do ANYTHING BUT FAIL!!!!!!!!!! Can I leave you with a question for today?????
Are you living in fear of the “undiscovered territory”?????
Can I get an Amen?????
"There's just "something" about the name "Jesus"!
