Thought For Today – “You Can Lead A Horse To Water But…”
By a show of “virtual” hands, how many of my loyal readers have ever had someone, especially a parent or grandparent try to tell you something when you were younger and you didn’t listen? Nomatter how hard they tried, you had your mind set on doing something and nothing was going to stop you or change your mind about it? Hmmmmmmmmm, I see a whole sea of hands raised! Wow, glad to know I’m not the only one who has made this common mistake LOL! And I don’t why I found that to be funny, because the end result of that I had been advised not to do backfired in my face each time in a bad kind of way! It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” And AMEN goes right here! How many of you have heard that old saying above? If you are from the South, you should have heard your grandparents, or great grandparents use that old saying many times, I know mine did. The saying symbolizes how some people can be led to the truth but be too stubborn, naïve, or forgive me for saying, too stupid to see or accept it! I can tell you from firsthand experience, I have tried to lead my horses to water many times over the years when I was rodeoing in a different town or state and they just refused to drink it nomatter how hot it was outside. This one came to me while I was out watering my horses in the smoldering heat this past weekend. I go out everyday to feed and water them, but especially water them. They are drinking a lot more water this time of the year due to the extreme heat in my area. Of course, the more something rings true to my mind, the more I start to believe it is a “Thought For Today” in the making, and this old saying was no different. What came next, is some Biblical examples of people God tried to lead to water (figuratively speaking) and for whatever reason, they just would not drink. First, we have to understand the concept of “leading someone or something to water.” #1. It is a necessity whatever it is the person is being led to. #2. The person doing the leading has done all the work in preparing the water for consumption. #3. The only action left in the process, if for the person (or animal) to just indulge. Sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? Then why is it so hard for people (horses in this case) to indulge in it???
The first example to come to mind for me, would be after God created the Angels in Heaven. Yes, I know that there are some scholars who dispute the fact that God even created the Angels and I’m not here to debate that. I believe God did create them and there’s no changing my mind unless He tells me differently. The Bible states that the Angels were created to for one reason and one reason only, to be messengers for Him and to carry out His will. I can’t remember where I read or heard it, that Bible stated that their first words spoken were “Holy, Holy, Holy” in reference to God. They appeared to be perfect beings in every way. Now let me throw you for a curveball, despite them being made flawless so to speak, one third of them still rebelled against God being led by Lucifer whom we know today as Satan or the Devil. In my “Third Eye Perspective” way of thinking, God created them to be perfect in every way, and then created them a paradise (Heaven) to dwell in. And He directed them to carry out His works or will. This would be the same as “Leading them to the water to drink” in my mind. If that is the case, how is it that when they were provided everything they could ever need, on third of them still rebelled? Would that not qualify as in likeness to “A horse being led to water, but it not being willing to drink?” All the Angels had to do, they one third that rebelled, was obey God and live forever in His paradise! As a result of their rebellion, they were kicked out of Heaven along with their newly found leader Lucifer, and are now known as demons. The next example that comes to mind, I almost don’t even want to mention. It seems that this group of people tend to find their way in most of my “Thought For Today’s” for one reason or another, the Israelites. Plain and simply put, these were God’s “chosen” people. Now let us just think about that term for a brief moment here. They were His “CHOSEN” people? The dictionary definition of that word is as follows – “Having been selected as the best or most appropriate.” It is hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that they were His chosen people, and He led them right up to the front door of their “promised land” and they didn’t get to enter (drink the water) into it for 40 years! How would you feel about walking around in the wilderness or desert for 40 long years because you didn’t follow through with fulfilling your part of His promise? I mean, God had sent them messengers to tell them that the land of Canaan was theirs for the taking and yet they still doubted it. Is this also not a very good example of “A horse (race of people) being led to water (their promised land) to drink (dwell/live/occupy) but they didn’t do it, at least not for 40 long years?
The last example I’ll share with you would be the story of the 12 Disciples on the boat on the Sea of Galilee (read Mark 4:39). In this example, you had the 12 closest friends or acquaintances of Jesus Christ. They were around Him for the most part everyday and night. They got to hear about what was to come after He was gone back to Heaven firsthand. They witnessed all of the miracles He performed on and for people, and yet they still doubted Him. In the particular story mentioned above in the book of Mark, they had all boarded a ship to sail across the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was down below deck taking a nap when all of a sudden and bad storm blew up out of nowhere. The waves were crashing up against the boat, tossing the ship about violently. In my mind, I can picture the boat swaying from side to side, then having huge wave after wave crashing up against the ship. I can also picture the Disciples being scared to death and thinking that they would soon all perish. The Bible states that one of the Disciples hurried below to wake Jesus from His nap to tell Him about the storm, and to ask Him to save them. I can see how this could easily have been you or I in this situation, in panic mode and worrying and fretting that the boat would sink. However, the Disciples had an inside scoop if you will, they had witnessed the many miracles that Jesus performed that no other man had done before. What’s more important about this failure on their part, is that they didn’t really believe apparently that He was who He said He was…. “The Son of God the Father in Heaven!” Otherwise, they would have known that He wasn’t about to let them die in that storm. As the story goes, Jesus wakes up and simply says three words and blows the minds of the Disciples…. “Peace Be Still.” The example of this story that correlates it to my subject, is that Jesus Christ gave his Disciples firsthand experiences or knowledge of how powerful He was, and they still questioned His capabilities. He literally “led” them around if you will, and led them to the water (Salvation) and they still hesitated to drink it at first. Aren’t we the same way? Despite the fact that God has led us (via the Holy Bible and 10 Commandments) to the promise of Salvation, and yet there are so many who still hasn’t drank the water. Despite all of the miracles documented in the Holy Bible, there are still people who actually question God’s existence, but do believe in a “higher power.” How does that even make sense? A higher power??? God is ALL POWERFUL and unequalled! There is NO OTHER GOD BESIDES HIM and NOTHING above Him either! Can I leave you with a question to ponder today if I may???
“Will you drink the water of Salvation if you haven’t already? God has prepared everything for you in Heaven that you could ever need!”
Can I Get An AMEN???
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that exactly what He did for us on the Cross?”
