Thought For Today – “A Setback Is Just A Setup For A Great Comeback!”
By a show of virtual hands raised, how many of you are in the middle of a setback right at this very moment? Come on now, don’t be shy get those hands up high? We have all be in “setback” protocol at one time or another in our lives, and there’s no need to be ashamed of it. Setbacks are just a natural part of life, they ARE going to happen whether you like them to or want them to or not. It is inevitable that at some point in our lives, everything will seem to be going wrong or against us. How you handle those setbacks will also dictate how positively or smoothly your future goes too. There is no time limit on longevity of any particular setback. Some of them can last from just hours, to days, weeks, months, and even years, depending on the type of setback you become victim of. One thing they all have in common, is that they are going to happen and that we don’t always have control of how long they last. But, with that being said, our attitude towards them can determine how “bumpy” the ride is during the duration of the setbacks. It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about “A Setback Is Just A Setup For A Great Comeback!” and AMEN goes right here! I have to admit that personally, I have not always handled my setbacks with the right attitude. At times, I allowed myself to become withdrawn, frustrated, angry, at the brink of giving up, and at times just wanted to crawl under a rock and stay there forever. I made two huge mistakes by allowing myself to fall into those emotional reactions, #1. I failed to take my “setbacks” and turn them over to God to at the very least, let Him deal with them for me. The Bible says that God will “fight ALL your battles, for you if you just ask him to, and “be still”. #2. I failed to keep my attitude positive despite everything around me at that particular time being very negative. This second one was very important in the sense that when you allow your attitude to match your mood, people will feed off of it good or bad! Another important fact about this second fact, is that you can’t show true “Faith” to God, IN God, and FOR God when you allow your circumstances to dictate your mood. The Bible also says “I will Praise God at ALL times!” And AMEN goes right here!
Now, I have already stated that “setbacks” are going to happen in everyone lives and that there is no avoiding them. But would you believe that a setback can be a “setup for a comeback”? I see you looking at me cross-eyed or like aunt Esther would look at Fred on the hit TV show “Sanford and Son,” right before calling him an “old fish eyed fool”. LOL! But it’s true, setbacks result in comebacks all day everyday if you look at the news. I’ll give you a few just to try and get you on the same page with me on this thought. In the NBA, the former Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose injured his ACL a couple of years or so ago which is definitely a setback for him and his team at the time. He rehabbed it and now says he’s better, stronger and even more explosive than he was before. In the NFL Adrian Peterson did the same thing a few years ago and all of the NFL fans know that he without a doubt came back stronger than he was the years before getting injured. In 2013, he came within about 10-15 yards of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing yards record of 2,105 yards. There are numerous other sports athletes that have injured themselves and then came back to be better than they were prior to their injury. You can even look at whole teams that had setbacks, like the Kansas City Chiefs who only won a few games in previous seasons and then had an almost undefeated season in 2014. Auburn Tigers football team, didn’t win but a couple games in the 2013 season and came within one win (Alabama) from getting to go to the College Football Playoffs. Bottom line is I could go on and on with example after example, and the examples all made a “comeback after experiencing a setback”.
Now, I’m going to get real deep on you…….are you ready for this, would you believe that even Jesus Christ had a few “setbacks?” You probably went “what that what, what are you talking about man?”. But it’s true, even Jesus Christ Himself had a few setbacks in his life here on earth. Since I know that people are not quick to take a person’s word without proof nowadays, i’ll provide a little for your benefit. You mean to tell me it isn’t considered a “setback,” knowing that the closest people to Him (His Disciples) would betray/deny Him when the spotlight was put on them about whether they not only knew him, but believed He really was the Son of God? Or how about this one, when He went into the wilderness and was tempted by Satan? Satan tried using trickery to get Jesus to fall for his temptations. What about when He had to prove that He even has complete and absolute power over the wind and sea, by telling them “Peace Be Still,” and they obeyed only because His Disciples became afraid WHILE having Jesus on their boat? It would be enough for a true believer to just have Jesus with them, and yet it wasn’t enough comfort to them when the storm came. Oh and by the way, Jesus already knew that the storm (or setback) was going to come, AND who was going to be the first one to come and awaken Him to do something about the storm. And the best example of all is, you don’t think it is a setback having to come down into a mean and very cruel world, trying to convince people who are full of sin, non-believers of God’s existence, and that the best way for them to have eternal life in Heaven, is to give up all of their sinful ways, pride, titles, popularity, social status, etc…to live a life of mediocrity, and then be marched from judgment hall, to judgment hall and found guilty of crimes He didn’t commit, and then be nailed to a Cross, beaten, mocked, ridiculed, pierced in His side….oh heck you get my point! Tell me that ain’t considered a “setback!” Ohhhhhhhhhhh, but let me tell you about how it all turned into a “comeback” of ALL comebacks……..I shouldn’t have to, if read your Bibles you already know! He hung, bled, then died on that old rugged Cross at Calvary’s Mount, but He didn’t stay dead. On the third day, Jesus Christ got up and declared victory over the grave, and with ALL power (In Heaven and on Earth) in His hands! If you find yourself in the middle of a setback currently, turn it over go God and start preparing for it to be turned into a COMEBACK!!! Can I leave you with a question to ponder?
When you are in the midst of a “Setback”, are you Faithful in God enough to view it as a “Setup for a great Comeback”????
Can I get an Amen???
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that exactly what He did for us on the Cross?”
