Thought For Today – “What Is The Holy Spirits Purpose?”
By a show of virtual hands, how many of my loyal audience can define the purpose of the Holy Spirit? Hmmmmmmnnnnnnn, I see a bunch of hands up over on the right side of the room. I see quite a bit more up in the middle of the room. The left side of the room has even more hands up. And the balcony and upper decks of the room appears that most of the hands are up in that section too! Those are some pretty good numbers of people who feel they know the purpose of the Holy Spirit in our lives! Keep your hands up, I have another question to ask you. Now answer me this question, how many of you who have your hands still raised obeys the Holy Spirit’s guidance 100% of the time? Yikes, shockingly every hand that was up went down like a bolt of lightning! I was going to say, that if anyone still had their hands up after I asked that question, I would not want to be standing next to them for precautionary measures in case a lightning bolt hit them LOL! It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “What Is The Holy Spirits Purpose?” And AMEN goes right here! If we were to put a definition to the question of what it is, I am certain it would go a little something like this, “Part of the Trinity (The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit) that God instilled in each of us to lead and guide us, and to be our conscience, and more importantly to convict us when we are about to do something we know to be wrong. I remember hearing Pastor Ron Carpenter say in his series on “The Choice,” that the Holy Spirit “will show you who you really are. It knows all of our weaknesses, bad habits, secret desires, in other words, it deals with the diseases of our hearts!” So in essence, the Holy Spirit works like an GPS directing our paths (if we’ll listen to it) in our everyday lives right? However, the one thing that the Holy Spirit can’t do, is force you to do something you don’t want to do! It can give you warning that you are about to make a huge mistake, and it can even cause us to feel totally and completely guilty after we made a mistake that we knew was going to be a mistake beforehand. And if we ignore it long enough, it can go completely silent, leaving us no guidance at all. And AMEN goes here also!
You might be wondering, “how does the Holy Spirit work exactly?” The best way to describe it using Biblical stories, would be for example, when Lucifer (aka Satan, aka the Devil) was still in Heaven as one of Gods most trusted and revered Angels (yes you read that right, I said ANGELS in Heaven), would never have rebelled if he had listened to the Holy Spirit the minute he started to believe he should be as regarded as God in the eyes of his peers! The Holy Spirits voice inside of him should have been so overwhelming convincing to him, that he had just crossed a line with God that would result in severe punishment, that he immediately felt conviction and repented. But instead, Lucifer ignored the Holy Spirit tugging at his conscience trying to get his attention back focused on serving God like he was created to do. The next example that comes to mind, is when Cain slew (killed) his brother Abel out of jealousy. Had Cain listened to the Holy Spirit, it would have told him that Abel was not guilty of doing anything wrong. Abel was actually killed for obeying God. And there is an inner lesson to be learned from the Cain and Abel incident. The very reason that some people are blessed more by God than others, has a lot to do with their offering they bring to Him! Their tithes, their Faithfulness in serving Him, ministering to the lost, helping people in need, without any expectation of repayment or even a thank you. In this case, Abel gave God a sacrifice consisting of some of his best (referred to as “firstlings” in the Bible). However, Cain did not do the same. His sacrifice did not contain the very best of his crops. Kinda like when a person goes to the grocery store to buy fresh fruit or vegetables, they pick the ripest and the best that store has on display right? Well it is the same thing in contrast to what Abel did. He went thru is stock that he had raised and picked out the very best ones to present to God as a sacrifice. Whereas Cain just grabbed a bundle or two of his crops and presented it to God. If we want God to truly Bless us, we need to bring to Him our very best effort in whatever it is we are bringing to Him. Okay, okay, okay, I’m getting a little off track here, but I just couldn’t pass up that opportunity to share that important lesson when it popped into my mind.
One of the main purposes of the Holy Spirit, it to keep us in good fellowship (aka good standing) with God at all times. Yes, God knows we are going to make mistakes, that is inevitable after the fall in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. However, it is the effort we put forth to do what’s right in God’s eyes and in keeping His commandments. The Holy Spirit is key in trying to keep this relationship alive and functioning properly as it should. Another good example from the Biblical days, would be after David slew the Giant “Goliath,” and later on became king of Israel. If you remember, David is known and referred to even today as a man that was after God’s own heart. Meaning that he worshipped God openly and often in life. However, he allowed a moment of weakness to ruin that almost perfect or as close as you can get to perfect image he had in God’s eyes, when he lusted over Bathsheba. You see, David was walking on the roof of his palace one day when he saw the most beautiful woman bathing. He ordered his servants to find out who she was and anything they could find out about her. They returned with the report that she was Bathsheba, wife of Uriah. It wasn’t long before David started to lust over her so much that he sent for her to come and visit him at his palace. As the story would go, he slept with her and made her pregnant. The Holy Spirt had to be screaming as loud as it possibly could for David to resist the temptation, but David ignored it. That lead to an even bigger sin when David decided he wanted her as his wife so badly, that he had Uriah killed in battle so that no one would question him marrying her. Here is another opportunity for a lesson to be learned. Everything that looks or feels good TO us, might not be good FOR us. The Holy Spirit has a very daunting task in trying to keep us on the straight and narrow on a daily basis. Especially in this day and age, there are so many distractions and temptations that the human race faces multiple times a day nomatter how “Holy” or Christlike we try to be. However, if we would stay in constant contact with, and more importantly be willing to yield to the voice of the Holy Spirit, we will help the Holy Spirit do its job in keeping us on the right path to Salvation! Can I leave you with a question to ponder today if I may?
“Are YOU Listening To The Holy Spirit Inside of You When Its Talking To You and Following Its Directions, EVERYTIME?”
Can I Get An AMEN?
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that exactly what He did for us on the Cross?”
