Are you sure YOUR name IS written in the Heavenly “Book of Life?” Is there absolutely not a shadow of a doubt in your mind, that your Salvation is already secured and you’re just waiting on the good Lord to call you home to be with Him? If the answer is “No, Not Sure, I Think So, Maybe, or Probably, then you need to get busy right now working on fixing that. The Third Eye Perspective:
By Carlos C. Brown
Thought For Today – “The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On The Other Side…”
Hebrews 13:5 – “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what Man shall do unto me.” KJV. Question for my audience, how many of you by a show of virtual hands, are not happy or satisfied with your life currently? Come on now, be honest here! Second question, how many of you have someone in mind whose life you wish you had, or would like to experience even if for only temporarily? Hmnnnnnn, I see a few hands up over on the right side of the room. I see quite a few up in the middle, and then even more up over on the left side and up in the balcony. I’m not going to say everyone in here, but way more than who raised their hands are experiencing this than what the raised hands represented. It is with this train of thought, or line of thinking, that it was placed on my heart this morning to talk about, “The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On The Other Side.” And AMEN goes right there! Now when I received this message this morning on my way to work, I had no clue who needed to hear it. I always try to first see if it is for me, and sometimes they are and sometimes they aren’t. I’m sure everyone has heard that old saying above, but whether or not you live by it is a totally different thing. I will be honest with you, in my distant past I have been very guilty of sneaking over to the fence to take a peek at the grass on the other side because it looked greener, prettier, and even tastier! What I didn’t realize at that time, is had I been watering and fertilizing the grass on MY side of that fence, it would have looked just as green and appealing! And AMEN goes right here too! People get caught up everyday “peeking over the fence” at someone else’s green grass, and before they know it, they are climbing thru or over that fence to see if they can just get a sample of it without getting caught. Sadly, we don’t realize that God sees all, even when we think we are slick enough to get away with it. And AMEN goes right here too!
I think about how many times I’ve watch horses reach thru my fences to eat the green grass on the other side of their pastures. There will be a clean spot as far as they can reach from one end of the fence to the other. I started thinking about some people in the Bible who made the mistake of “peeking over at the green grass on the other side” way too long. The first that comes to mind is Adam and Eve. Who if you know the story in the book of Genesis, got caught “Peeking at the green grass,” in the form of the forbidden fruit tree. God had given them full run of the Garden of Eden, with just ONE stipulation…… “never, eva, eva, eva, eat of the forbidden fruit tree!” Well we all know how that turned out don’t we? They learned a very valuable lesson after indulging in that grass across the fence figuratively speaking. The next example that comes to mind, would be The Prodigals son (read Like 15:11-32). This is probably one of, if not the best example of all time of “peeking over the fence at the grass on the other side.” In this case, the younger son of a successful business man couldn’t wait for his father to die to receive his inheritance, he wanted it now while he was young, because he had dreams of traveling the world to see the sights, aka he saw the green grass on the other side of the fence. He too learned a very powerful lesson, that sometimes we have it way better than we think we do with what we already have. And AMEN goes right here too! He found himself broke and destitute, feeding swine or as we called it on the farm, “slopping the hogs!” That green grass (the bright city lights in his case) he thought was greener than the ones in his father’s house turned into the worst grass he had ever tasted. He found himself hungry almost to the point of eating the very same slop that he was feeding to the swine! Then comes Sampson, ohhhhhh you know this story too right? No, awwww come on now? Well go and (read Judges 16: 1-20). It is the story of a man God blessed with super human strength to be a champion/protector of Israel. He once slew thousands of Philistines with the jawbone of an ox. As the story goes, Sampson went to Gaza on day and there he saw a Philistine woman named Delilah, who some state was a prostitute. Long story short, Delilah was bribed to find out the secret to his strength. Sampson got too caught up in the green grass on the other side of the fence. You see, He was an Israelite, and she was a Philistine, and as history would have it, they didn’t get along. Once she learned the secret of Sampson’s strength (his hair), she cut his long hair and rendered him powerless.
As the story would end, the Philistines gouged Sampson’s eyes out, imprison him and put him to work turning a large millstone and grinding corn. The moral of Sampson’s story, is that he forgot who his strength came from. But his downfall started with just glimpsing over the fence at the green grass on the other side (at a Philistine girl named Delilah). The next person that comes to mind as being guilty of “peeking over at the green grass on the other side of the fence,” would be Lots wife (read Genesis 19:26). Lot and his family were set to be the only survivors of the two cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, that were destroyed by God because of their sin. However, at the very height of their escape from the fire and brimstone rain of fire that was falling down on both cities, she did exactly what God had warned them not to do, she looked back at what could only equate to my symbolism of the green grass on the other side of the fence. No one knows exactly why she looked back but God. It has been debated, that she looked back to take one last look at her old life and was immediately turned into a pillar of salt. Ladies, this is a very good example, of never looking back at your old life (or the green grass on the other side of the fence). If God had it in His will for you it would be yours. Also, never give God the impression that you miss the old life He delivered you from, because what He has in store for you is so much better than that old life gave you. The last example I’ll give you is probably going to make some of you cringe a little, or maybe a lot! It is the story of King David and Bathsheba (read 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel ). David was the little shepherd boy, who rose to fame and fortune and also who became King over Israel, after slaying the Giant Goliath on the battlefield. He is known as a man after God’s own heart in his loyalty and worshipping of God. He is also the father of another Kind of Israel, Solomon who would eventually go down in Biblical history as the wisest man in the Bible. However, one day while sitting on his castle rooftop, David glanced over in the distance and saw Bathsheba bathing in the sunlight nude. He became fascinated with her so much, that he urged his servants to go and bring her to him. Despite her being married, he then proceeded to have an affair with her. If that wasn’t bad enough, he had her husband who served in his army, killed in battle so that he could marry her. This was the beginning of the downfall of King David. Lesson learned here, although the green grass (in this case someone of the opposite sex who is already taken) may look very pleasing to the eyes, it is a sin to lust over, or engage in being with them. There is an old saying, “if you water and fertilize your own grass, it will be just as appealing to the eye as the green grass across the fence.” Author unknown… The fence is a representation of a border or boundary, that we should never cross for those who haven’t picked up on that little tidbit of information. Can I leave you with a question to ponder today if I may?
“Are You Willing To Resist The Green Grass On The Other Side of The Fence?” Can I Get An AMEN?????
“Today, choose to “Ride or Die” with Jesus Christ! Afterall, isn’t that EXACTLY what He did for us on the Cross?”
