Truly one of the all-time greats, Smokey Snyder of Cripple Creek, Colo., won five world bull riding championships and two world bareback titles. Snyder, born June 1, 1908, began his rodeo career at age 15 when he won the bareback riding in Hussar, Alberta. He became one of the first cosmopolitan cowboys ever in professional rodeo. In 1934, he won the Australian bareback riding championship and later that year won bull and bareback riding trophies in London. He also traveled the circuit in Canada and the United States. A compact 145-pound man, Snyder was exceptionally strong. Eyewitnesses report seeing him perform 20 chin-ups with one arm. He competed until an injury forced him into retirement in 1946. Snyder was killed in an auto accident in 1965.
World championships: 7 (bareback riding, 1932, 1936; bull riding, 1931, 1932 (tie), 1935-37)

: It would be a better roping. Seems like
: sometimes those guys are so worried about
: jerking them off their feet it effects the
: rest of the run.
:
: It don't help when the bull rider
: commentator keeps saying what a great rule
: this is and it should be implemented at all
: rodeos.
:
: He might change his mind if they banned
: flank straps in the rough stock events to
: please the animal rights people. The ARA's
: complain just as much about that as they do
: the calf roping. But they sure make a point
: to say the flank strap doesn't hurt anything
: and leave the calf ropers out to dry.
:
: Couple of years ago I even seen the barrel
: racers could not slap their horse on the
: neck or they would be disqualified.

: Maybe they will have to rope some roped out
