John Rae Powell, 90, of Eldorado, Texas, passed away into glory on May 15, 2015, at home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1925, in Fort Worth, Texas, to David and Elizabeth Rae Powell. John Rae graduated High School in Sweetwater, Texas, in 1942, then immediately joined the Marine Corps where he served two-and-a-half years in the South Pacific, including the battle of Iwo Jima. After he served, John lived in San Angelo and worked for Producers Livestock until he moved to Schleicher County to run his mother's ranch for her in 1947. This ranch had been established by her father John Rae in 1883. Starting in 1985, to the present, the ranch has been owned and operated with his son, Johnny. In 1954, John married Tibba McMullan. They worked on the ranch together, raised two children, Johnny and Margo, attended First Presbyterian Church and were active in community affairs. John served on the school board and was on the ASCS committee.
John spent all his summers as a boy with his grandfather, John Rae. This is where John learned to love and appreciate the land. He taught himself to rope and has had a passion for roping ever since. John was competitive in team roping, steer roping and calf roping through the years. He loved just as much, however, spending the day in the practice pen with family and good friends, and recently with his great-grandsons. Work and attending to the ranch, however always came first.
Survivors include his son, Johnny Powell and wife Claire of Eldorado; daughter Margo and husband Ken Smith of Hobbs, New Mexico; five grandchildren include Marty and Megan Powell of Eldorado, Tibba and husband Sterling Smith of Stephenville, Keli and husband Casey Hatley of Hobbs, New Mexico, and Stefanie and husband JayDee Logan of Hobbs, New Mexico; three great-grandchildren include Shane Smith and Cason and Kyon Hatley.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the excellent and loving care that was given to John by Hospice of San Angelo and also request memorials be made to them.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2015, in Eldorado Cemetery.
