Went through that 6 months ago on a broodmare (I know, I know, stupid). Had to remove and clean the metal plates twice a day, but other than that it wasn't a big deal. She had an infection that cut off her wind pipe and she would have died without the procedure. Once the infection worked itself out, the trach was removed. It healed over in less than 2 months, you would never know it was there now.
Unless you're talking about something different, I couldn't imagine using one with a trach in it for anything demanding.
