Posted by nina on August 25, 2002, 3:27 pm We, Coline, Nina and Sara, three Belgian Riot Grrrls, have been offered to participate in a Belgian art initiative, called Camping Sanseveria. (See: http://www.campingsanseveria.be the site is in Dutch and only contains info on the project as a whole.) The project aims to confront people with art in a fun and unconventional way. The idea is that each participating artist gets a caravan that she/he can use as she/he pleases. The caravans are now on a campsite in Kalmthout, Antwerp, but after September 6-7-8 they will move to various locations in Belgium and beyond. Our idea is to found a Riot Grrrl caravan. There is more than one purpose to the caravan: 1) it would serve as an archive in which anything related to Riot Grrrl and feminist/grrrl initiatives can be stored. A Riot Grrrl library on wheels, if you wish. (Note that the term Riot Grrrl shouldn't be interpreted that strictly: anything that has to do with feminist resistance and grrrl revolution belongs in the caravan.) The archive would contain zines, manifestos, tapes, videos, badges, clothes, stickers, cds, records, flyers, patches, photos, bootleg recordings, signatures, posters, books, anything. The archive can be consulted by people already involved in Riot Grrrl, but it also aims to provide information to people who have never heard of Riot Grrrl or who have been disinformed about Riot Grrrl and feminism through other media. 2) next to being an archive, the caravan would be a great place for Riot Grrrl activities/workshops/diy projects that are aimed at spreading the message of Riot Grrrl and providing information about Riot Grrrl and feminism to a larger public. In the three closing days (6-7-8 Sept.) of the exhibition at Camping Sanseveria we aim to organise activities that are meant to make people more familiar with Riot Grrrl and with feminism. It would also be great if the information and the activities could inspire people to found their own projects/bands/websites/organisations/whatever. 3) there will be a website that will be updated as frequently as possible to report about the activities taking place in the caravan. The website will contain information about Riot Grrrl and the caravan and will contain many links to other Riot Grrrl/feminist/diy projects. We would also like to make the archive available on-line. Since we don't have much time left to finish both the caravan and the website, we would like to do an urgent call for submissions! Anything that you would like to send us: zines, tapes, clothes, stickers, website links, really anything related to Riot Grrrl and/or feminist/grrrl projects is welcome. We are also still looking for people to "join our team". Many practical things still need to be done: cleaning the caravan, decorating it, etc. We can also hand out your flyers/free zines if you send us enough copies. We won't sell any of your things in the caravan or on-line. The deadline for submissions is 5 September!! You can still send things afterwards, but then it won't be shown at the exhibition-weekend taking place at Kalmthout 6-7-8 September. Send your submissions to: (please notify us through email when you send us something) Sara 's Jegers MORE PRACTICAL DETAILS Everything that we receive will be treated with utmost care, but we can't take responsibility if anything gets lost or damaged. We prefer to keep the things that you send us for our archive, but we will return items on request. In that case we will just make a copy or a photo of what you send us, put that in the website archive and return the item to you asap. As soon as the website is up and running, you may also send in scans/photographs of things that you'd rather not send through the mail. We will then put your pictures/scans in the on-line archive along with a description and your address so people will know where to find your items. If you own a business, and are unable to send us things for free, we would like to hear on any special offers that you may have. We also welcome donations (we prefer cash, but you can also transfer money to the following, Belgian bank account: 063-9885263-28 Sara 's Jegers). Finally, we would love for you to help us think of a name for the caravan/the project. Any suggestions may be sent to the email addresses below.
