I recently aquired a Pietta 1858 .44 buffalo pistol.
I took it to the range and shot it and wound up getting some kind of shapnel blown back into my cheek and arm.
I loaded it with 25 grains of pyrodex p fffg pistol powder, then a wonder wad on top of that, then a proper sized conical projectile on top of that and pressed it firmly in place.
I then fired it , the first few were fine, but then I felt a sting like a bee sting on my cheek, and thought hrm maybe just some flashback ,then noticed little bits of what I think was cap stuck in my arm , jsut tiny tiny bits.
So I decided to try a smaller load , I then repeated the process with 20 grains of pyrodex and the same wonderwad, conical, and #10 cap , same results , some fired good but again another blow back.
All nipples were securely in place, not bent up or anything .
what can cause your pistol to fire bits of debris straight back at you like that ?
