usually if the barrel is 6 to 8 inches and octagonal (i am assuming this is a percussion or flintlock.) start with 80 grains of powder. do not put more than 100 grains of powder. make sure u put the powder in first then a patch with lubricant on it. set the patch on the barrel opening then put the ball on top of the patch stry and get it even on the patch thenwith a ball starter start the ball down the barrel. finish with the ramrod. make sure u seat the ball snugly then put ur cap on the nipple or if a flintlock put ur powder in the pan usually about 2 to 5 grains shud do it. pull the hammer back and pull the trigger. if it does not fire rite away wait at least a minute before u check it out. it cud delay fire. if u need to put powder in the nipple hole. (have to remove the nipple to do this) then screw the nipple back in. if flintlock clean the flash hole out then put more powder in the pan, this time it will fire. shud always fire the first time but there are occasions they do not. after each fireing u want to make sure the nipple hole and flash hole are cleaned out. with todays powder they stay pretty clean.
if u have an inline then just take it to a dealer and they can show u how to load and clean it. u can also take the percussion an flintlock into a gun dealer and they can show u what u need and how to load. they are a blast to shoot but a lot of work.
