Hey Blaster;
1 in 48" is no compromise twist, the majority of early muzzleloaders used this rate of twist. It was used mostly to economize on powder. Most modern shooters are overcharging rifles with this rate of twist. The powder charge for a 1 in 48" is traditionally no more than 15 0r 20 grains more the the calibre size, ie, .45 calibre = no more than 65 grains. A 1 in 48" will shoot very well if the right patch ball combination is used, and the powder charge is right. TTYL.

: I have a .50 cal Pedersoli Tennessee long
: rifle. It has that 1 in 48" compromise
: twist and won't shoot round balls or mine
: balls to my satisfaction. It was close to
: becoming a lamp when I tried some of Lee's
: R.E.A.L. bullets. The 250 gr. bullet lubed
: with liquid Alox and 80 grains of RS shoots
: a near classic clover leaf at 50 yards. The
: leaves don't touch but they are close enough
: for the rifle to get a reprieve.
