i use the technique you saw the old guy do with my long guns for competition accuracy. I use a prelubed strip about 2" wide then seat the ball with a short starter so it's just below the end of the muzzle then simply cut flush across the muzzle with a sharp knife.
The trouble with petroleum products and BP is the heat and residue of the powder burning mixed with oil leaves a nasty really hard "gunk" in the bore. This stuff is simular to Asphalt pavement in chemical nature and will foul the rifling immediatly. It can be cleaned out but it takes hours of scrubbing and lots of solvent.
Margarine might be too slick. I know gents that use "shortning" like Crisco melted with beeswax to stiffen it up a bit. The way's of patch lube are many and varied and sometimes coveted secrects, log on to the "Muzzleloading Forum" or the "Traditional Muzzleloading Association" here in the states.
