Thank you Fred, pleased to meet you too. No precut patches are available locally, so what I've been doing is taking a cotton strip about 3 inches wide, wetting a spot, placing the ball on the spot and insert in the muzzle so that the ball won't move, then cut the patch flush with the top of the ball. I saw an old guy do this and I copied his technique. Now I'm looking for a wadcutter. From what you tell me it should be 28 to 30mm. Thank you for the advise on petroleum derivates. I was going to try Vaseline. Do you think margarine would serve?
40 grains of BP is indeed a stout charge, but it works for me as I only use it for hunting hares, capibara and roe deer. I use 20 grains for my target load.

: well my pleasure ta meet ya. What i use for my
: .40 cal rifle and my 45 pistole is a off the
: shelf precut round patches that have a
: diameter of about 1 1/8 inches or 2.8 mm to
: you guy's. Anything a bit larger up too
: 3-3.5mm is ok too!
: The only thing the gun needs is a snug fit
: of the patch/ball combo to impart the
: rifling to the ball. excess fabric over the
: PRB is really a mute issue as long as it's
: not "rudley" excessive. Know what
: I mean?
: Lube; Spit is good, as long as you can
: consistantly provide the same amount of
: spit, to the same size patch each time you
: load. And, if you shoot before the spit
: dries up. Natural lubes like olive oil, veg
: oil, bees wax, or a combination of above is
: ok too.(Sueit,Beef, sheep, deer,,) STAY AWAY
: from any kind of PETROLIUM BASED OILS!
: 40 grns of powder sounds a little stout.
