It sounds like normal wear or "peening" of the nipple. That is especially true if you dry fire or snap the hammer with no cap in place. Do you take the nipple out when you clean? I do and I leave it out until my next shooting session. You might also try the Ampco nipples from Track of the Wolf. They don't rust and seem to last longer.

: This is the second nipple this has happened
: to. I have a .54 cal CVA percussion. I use
: #11 primers on it. I had problems with the
: orginal nipple after about 2 years of use.
: The primers would fit on, but when the
: hammer fell nothing happened. It would take
: a second hammer fall to set the primer off.
: What it appeared happened is that the nipple
: had expanded and the primer would only fit
: on so far. Because it was tight, the hammer
: would only push the primer down sligthly,
: and it would not contact to fire. I replaced
: the nipple and solved the problem. After 2
: years with the new nipple the same thing has
: happened.
:
: Suggestions on why this is occuring? I would
: like to solve it so that I don't have to
: keep replacing nipples every few years, and
: finding out when I need to replace them when
: there are deer in the sights (has occurred
: on both occasions).
:
: Thanks
