gun for reenacting

planning on portraying a tavern/inkeeper of the 1740-1760 era who lived in early n. carolina. new to the hobby and was just wondering if a pistol would be a good gun to choose for my persona? i would guess that an inkeeper would have kept one close at hand for any trouble that may have been started by the longhunter or occasional indian who stopped in for trade. for those who have been in the hobby for a while what do you think?
