.44 cal cap-and-ball

i want to hook a string to an arrow and shoot it out of my .44 cap-and-ball pistol so i can loop it over a dead branch high up in a tree and pull it down. I know it can be done because Daniel Boone threatened to shoot someone with the ramrod still stuck in his flintlock (snuck up on him while he was reloading) anyway, does anyone have an idea whether i will blow myself and the pistol up? (the harpoons they shoot at whales have ropes attached; how do then do that?)
