I built a rifle from T/C replacement parts. It came in about $100 less than an off the shelf T/C Hawken. I used a Green Mountain .50 barrel with a 1/70" twist. 1/28" is also available. The Green Mountain T/C drop in barrels are drilled and tapped for scope mounts so one could have a 1/70" with primative sights for competition and a 1/28" with a scope for meat hunting. The extra barrel would make the total cost about $75 over the cost of a T/C.

: What kind of Hawkin rifle do you have exactly?
: Is it a Thompson Center? Thompson Center
: Hawkins have a 1 :48 twist rate. I don't
: know if it has always been that way but as
: far as I can remember it has. The 1:48 twist
: rate falls between a 1:18 to 1:34 rate that
: uses bullets of various lengths and a 1:56
: to 1:75 or even slower rate for shooting
: roundballs. 1:48 twist rate is a compromise
: twist rate meant to shoot both bullets and
: balls but doe's not really suit either
: ideally. In my opinion, for shooting
: roundballs a .50 cal barrel should have at
: least a 1:72 twist rate. For shooting short
: squat bullets like Buffalo Bullets the
: barrel should have a 1:32 twist or somewhere
: close. The Green Mountain replacement
: barrels with 1:28 twist are meant for
: shooting a wide selection of saboted pistol
: bullets. A 1:26 or 1:24 twist rate might be
: better for hunting with a li'l heavier
: saboted bullets which would be longer and
: require a faster twist rate to stabilize
: them. The heavier pistol bullets ( at least
: 260 grains) would get you a bit more energy
: downrange. There's a place called
: Muzzleloaders Emporium that can make drop in
: replacement barrels like in your choice of
: twist, groove depth....etc. They don't come
: with sights if I recall correctly. The older
: TC hawken stocks are sought after because
: they have a longer reach and less drop I
: think. The very first ones were made of
: curly maple if I'm not mistaken. You can
: build a "TC" hawken or renegade
: entirely from replacement parts. There are
: "upgrade" stocks available. All
: the parts can be found easily so you can
: modify one. They are the only blackpowder
: rifles I know of that you could build a
: rifle from replacement components.
