Hey thanks alot. Sorry about getting back to all of you guys... The xmas and newyears thing has kept me buisy. You all have given great info. I do believe the gun is either a 1 in 66 or 1 in 48. I am going to follow you and use Pyrodex or American Frontier powder. The pellets and goex sticks are not right for the gun.
Thanks

: You need to find out what the rifling twist
: rate is first. If it is 1 turn in 60-70
: inches it will not spin a saboted bullet
: fast enough to stabilize . That rate is for
: a patched round ball. If is is 1 in 25-30
: someting it will do fine for an elongated
: bullet or minie' ball. A common twist is 1
: in 48 which is considered a compromise twist
: but isn't super good with either. To me,
: it seems better with a minie' ball. I've
: never shot any saboted bullets. I get a
: giggle out of shooting well with bullets
: that I have cast myself.
:
: I shoot only Pyrodex. It is available most
: everywhere and doesn't change properties per
: batch as black powder can do. It has a
: higher ignition temperature and causes
: problems for flint guns but most percussion
: caps will ignite it. It is also safer to
: store than black powder.

: Yes I did a search too, I came up with the
: same conclusion. They are quality firearms.
: I think my cousin payed about $400 for the
: gun. Which brings me to the next things you
: siad. My cousin owned it and it was fired
: about 4-5 years ago. I am new to the BP seen
: but not to guns. It is in fine working
: condition and clean. I do have a couple of
: friends that know about BP rifles that have
: been helping me, but they are more familiar
: with newer BP rifles. This is why I was not
: sure of the powder loads. I was thinking of
: using American Pioneer powder, would you
: suggest Pyrodex instead? I was looking to
: hopefully be able to work up a load from
: 80-100grains for shooting 240 grain sabots.
: Can you expand on what exactly you mean
: about measuring powder by volume not weight.
: I mean I understand what you are saying but
: how do I measure it out to 80 grains by
: volume. Sorry do not mean to sound stupid.
: I did shoot the gun with a friend last
: week. Found out that Goex pellets are not
: right for the gun. I did not get good
: powder burns at all. So regular powder is
: the way togo I believe. Anyways thanks for
: all you input and hope you can continue to
: help.

: I did a quick Google search for Miroku
: firearms and they appear to make quality
: products but I'd still get a gunsmith to
: look it over before I shot it. Since you
: seem new to black powder guns, I'd get
: someone that knows them to go with you on
: your first time out.
: I use 80 grains of Pyrodex RS in both of my
: Hawken style rifles. That gets good
: accuracy and low recoil. I wouldn't go over
: 120 grains. Always measure Pryodex by
: volume, not by weight.

: I have a .50 cal. Ultra-Hi BP hawkens rifle,
: with a heavy octagon barrel. It is about
: 10-11 yrs. old. What are acceptable powder
: loads for a rifle like this one? Under 150,
: 120, 100, 80 grains of powder? Can anyone
: advise? Thanks.
