The lyman trade rifle is a shallow grooved iron bore in a 1/48 twist cap lock, In my experiance, the gun can achieve 4-6" accuracy at 100 yards off hand with a dryish, tight fitting patched round ball if bore consistancy is maintained.
At shorter ranges,75 yrds or bellow, any manor of heavy conicals can be used with devistating terminal ballistics and accuracy. However, the "middlin twist" and shallow groove won't allow any long range accuracy with bullet shaped or sabot style projectiles.
The LEE R.E.A.L work well out too 50 yrds. and the skirted style maybe a bit beyond. The key is to propel the projectile at the proper spin rate down the bore and hit the target.. not simply "shove" a hunk of lead out the end as fast as possible,,and hope ya hit something.
