mike, generally original pieces in good to very good condition tend to be quite useable. from time to time they may require some minor work (replacing worn out springs and nipples) but nothing major usually. Taking a operational piece out and firing it may tend to be looked down on as this often times (not always though) will drop the value (i say not always as this tends to be a reflection on how often they are used, the load [meaning pyrodex or black powder{as black powder tends to be more corrosive} used in it] and also how well they are cared for. given proper care firing an original piece will not harm value very much (maybe a hundred or so dollars max [though it's best to consult a firearms appraiser to make sure on some pieces]) as you will notice a lot of cowboy action shooters and reenactors are actually using original pieces. also you will notice a lot of firearms museums will take out original pieces and fire them at public demonstrations from time to time, and give them proper care immediately thereafter. the only drawback to original pieces (aside from somtimes having to replace springs [which springs from replicas fit as the replicas are built to the same specs as the originals]) is like you said, they are on the pricy side. hope that helps you out some on your decision. unfortunately none of my fellow confederates knew of anyone else making the replicas (though we still think there should be more making them).
