I was looking at the Pedersoli site and saw the Gibbs,Tyron target, and Mortimer "Whitworth rifles". I really like this type of muzzleloader with a 1:18 - 1:22 inch twist and peep sights. I also read info on "Doc" White's personal site. He makes a "sporter" that is similar as well. It seems a .451 caliber bullet rifle would make a good choice for hunting. The elongated bullets would be as powerful as a .54 cal. round ball and the .45 bullets would be good at extended ranges.
These type of rifles are primarily competition guns out tho a range of up to 1000 yards. I was thinking about a Jaeger rifle that would shoot true bullets. That would be cool. The Jaeger seems to be a good choice anyway. Building a Doc White style "sporter" might be much easier. The breech would have to withstand high pressures as well as the threaded nipple. I saw an English hook bar type breechplug and tang in the Track of the Wolf catalog online that is made for a tang sight too. This looks sturdy enought but I'm not sure.
I wouldn't want to blow myself up. I dissmissed the idea of a flint ignition because of the size of the vent hole. I was told the larger opening would result in lower muzzle velocity. I've seen a percussion Jaeger lock though. I think the English sporter would be a smarter choice. These rifles are expensive and I was just throwing around the idea making one instead. It would probably come close in price but again I'm not sure yet.
The bullets used would be well over 400 grains and thus have greater energy at extended ranges. A slipfit bullet could be altered by drilling ( in a drill press) a hole .100 wide and at least .400 deep in the nose. I think I read this in Doc White's site. A hollowpoint would seem to be a better choice for deer. I just wanted to know if anyone had any input on this idea of a maybe making a bullet gun for hunting.
