New to the sport myself, but I've been studyin'...
Pyrodex pellets come in 30 and 50 grain. Some sidelocks don't like 'em much. They have an "igniter layer" on the back end and are designed mainly for inline ignition setups.
Pyrodex isn't "smokeless", but a black powder substitute. I don't think it's changed in the past decade. One of the new powder substitutes on the market is Hodgden's 777. Supposed to burn cleaner than BP or Pyrodex. Haven't used it, so I can't say whether that's true or not. Some have reported some nasty hard crud left behind by burnin' it.
